If You Were Me and Lived in… Russia Review

Reviewed by Debbie Douglas

If You Were Me and Lived in…. are a series of book that are a child’s introduction into culture’s around the world.

Carole P. Roman is also the author of the brilliant Captain No Beard series of which Craig and I are huge fans so we had high expectations of this book. The book is very informative but in a fun story like way. It doesn’t just bombard you with facts. We learned that there are nine different time zones in Russia and that the climate varies from warm to cold. I say we because I had no idea that there were nine time zones in Russia a fact we both found fascinating.

I like how the book has big font which encouraged Craig to pick out words he recognised and because some of the words are sounded out e.g. “muscovite” (mus-co-vite) this was particularly helpful for Craig. There is also a pronunciation list at the book which sounds out all the trick words which is a brilliant idea. The book is beautifully illustrated with gorgeous colourful pictures to go with the narrative. Craig loved how they like to play chess in Russia as this is something he is trying to learn.

I would love to collect the whole series of these books and I think they are a must for any school or nursery library. These books would definitely encourage kids to learn about other countries. Once again Carol P. Roman does not disappoint, this is a fabulous book.
