How The Other Half Loves opened at The Lowry theatre in Salford, Manchester this week. A comedy set in the late 1960’s this play tells the tale of an adulterous couple, Bob and Fiona and their attempts to keep their deceit under wraps.
Bob, played by Leon Ockenden, has been having an affair with Fiona, Caroline Langrishe, who is married to his boss Frank Foster, played by Robert Daws. After Bob’s wife Terri, played by Charlie Brooks, becomes suspicious of his whereabouts one evening he attempts to cover his tracks by saying he was drinking with a coworker William Featherstone, played by Matthew Cottle. This small white lie sets off a chain of events that drags the unwitting William and Mary, played by Sara Crowe into the middle of this domestic drama
The play takes place in the living rooms of the Fosters and the Phillips with both rooms being portrayed in one set. This was a very interesting way of showing both halves of the story simultaneously. The layout of the two living rooms was very engaging for the audience, the clear differences between the two couples was apparent from the style and surroundings of each room and the way the set was designed by Julie Godfrey made it very easy to follow the story and know which house the action was taking place in at any given time.
The play was very funny throughout with all the actors showing great comedic talent. In particular the dinner party scene was hilarious and special mention must go to Matthew Cottle and Sara Crowe for their superb ability to switch instantaneously between each dinner party as the bewildered Featherstones.
Despite having first opened in 1969 this play doesn’t feel dated at all. It was a truly engaging and entertaining that I would highly recommend.
Tickets cost from £15.50 to £32.50 (booking fees may apply).
