My son is an avid Horrible Histories fan, so he was really looking forward to the Horrible Histories: Terrible Tudors show. On entering a very packed theatre we were issued with 3D glasses which increased our excitement. The show started with the three-cast presenting their show all about ‘The Terrible Tudors’. They cleverly told the tale of Richard III and then Edward VI and then moved onto what we had all been waiting for Henry VIII. The children screamed as Henry entered the stage and the audience obviously loved it. The set up was limited but effective and the threesome were all very talented and their songs were amusing and made both child and adults laugh or scream out loud. The six wives of Henry VIII song had everyone participating in the gestures and the interval left us all wanting more. Following the interval, the crew explained the turbulent years of Elizabeth I and again the story was filled with charm, silly dances and songs and great acting. The second half had the added bonus of 3D effects/Bogglevision (spiders, explosions, blood, skeletons) and it was just a shame that the 3D effects were not throughout the whole show. The Times stated that the whole show was an explosion of joy and excitement, and I wholeheartedly agree.
The show was very entertaining. I took my teenage son and it was too young for him, but it suits the ages of 4-10 perfectly. The show was funny, interesting, fast paced and the 3 talented cast members (Simon Knock, Lisa Allen and Izaac Cainer) played so many roles it was amazing. It’s definitely something to watch if you want good clean fun – a must for families of small children. They are touring at the moment and also performing the Awful Egyptians so this I imagine will be equally as entertaining! (at Preston Guild till Saturday 17th November).
A superb show. Great not ghastly!
