Today my family and I were lucky enough to enjoy a performance of ‘Here Be Monsters’ at the Epstein Theatre in Liverpool. This lively family show is based on the children’s book of the same name by Jonathan Emmett. The story follows Captain Cut-throat and his crew of pirates as they sail the seas in search for a treasure island filled with jewels and gems. The treasure map warned of monsters in the mist but the captain repeatedly reassures his crew that ‘monsters simply do not exist’, however as they sail into the mist one by one the crew members encounter monsters in the form of large, colourful puppets creeping in to the side of the stage.
The story is really brought alive by the five talented actors/musicians through lots of catchy songs, sound effects and jokes. The actors all brought so much energy to the performance and there was lots of audience interaction which all the kids loved. The show is aimed at children aged 3+ and as our little boy is not quite 3 yet I was worried he may get fed up during or find it a little scary but he was completely captivated throughout, clapping along and shouting out to warn the pirates of approaching monsters! Our ten year old, who felt she might be too old for the show, also had a great time. Even us adults couldn’t stop ourselves from clapping along, tapping our feet to the music and laughing at the silly jokes. It really was a show for all the family to enjoy. The performance was face paced and lasted for just under an hour with no interval which I felt was a perfect amount of time for keeping the attention of the younger children and makes it an ideal first theatre experience for little ones.
If you are looking for a fun family show for children and adults of all ages I would not hesitate to recommend ‘Here Be Monsters’.
