A few days ago, I was offered the fabulous opportunity of reviewing the Helly Hansen Women’s Maud Pile Jacket in Jungle Green.
When I first took the jacket out of the box I was impressed with the shade of green as it is a dark green. The pile is lovely and soft and the jacket is really warm when worn; I never expected this jacket (which doesn’t have a lining) to be so warm, and was also very surprised by the weight of this jacket as it is 780g according to the information on the QR Code. I just checked the weight with a luggage scale and it is bang on 780g.
They refer to the pockets of this jacket as ‘hand pockets’, these are very deep and although the parts of the pocket which are not on view are made from a different material to the jacket itself, they kept my hands very warm when I was walking around.
The longer than usual length of this jacket is another selling point and something I love about it; this means that the small of my back is covered as the jacket reaches down to my thighs so no part of my back felt cold at all which used to happen with other short jackets. The sleeves are a little too long for me but that is quite normal, I am used to just folding them back on themselves if necessary.
I travelled to the Cotswolds with my husband to visit his sister and whilst there we popped into the town centre as we needed to visit a couple of shops. Although it was very cold and misty, I did not feel cold at all whilst wearing this jacket. I do not know if it would have been showerproof had it been raining.
I intend to wear it again when I go into London in a couple of day’s time to visit the Christmas Markets and see the Christmas decorations and Lights. I also almost forgot to mention the hood which should be nice and cosy when out walking the dog.
On the label of this jacket is a QR code which contains information about the jacket, when I scanned it with my phone it said ‘We designed the Women’s Maud Pile Jacket to offer a feminine twist on the classic pile jacket, featuring a roomier, updated fit and curved hem for a silhouette that stands out. Made from a softer and more comfortable pile fabric, this jacket is warmer and cozier than ever.’
They definitely achieved what they set out to do!!
Also found within the information on the QR code it says the fibre content of the shell of the jacket is 100% recycled polyester, what a fantastic way to reuse what would normally have been thrown away. It can also be machine washed in water up to 30 degrees centigrade on a gentle cycle and can even be tumble dried on a low heat which is fantastic news. I hate trying to dry heavy winter clothes indoors when the rain is coming down.
I decided to find out more about how the Helly Hansen company had started. It was originally founded in 1877 in Moss, Norway by a Norwegian sea captain and his wife Maren Margareth. They set out to create waterproof hard-wearing garments for seafarers so the clothing they wore when out at sea gave them more protection from the elements. They found when they soaked coarse linen in linseed oil the result was a waterproof material. Captain Hansen and his wife began making oilskin jackets, trousers and other items from the resulting material.
Since they opened in 1977 the Helly Hansen range has been greatly extended and now Helly Hansen produces a variety of things, outerwear, base layers, sportswear and footwear, these are sold in more than 40 countries around the world.
Helly Hansen won their first award at the 1878 World Exhibition in Paris for having produced a type of clothing which would provide protection for people who lived and worked outdoors in harsh conditions.
The Helly Hansen Headquarters remained in Moss, Norway from 1877 until October 2009 but it is now in Oslo.
