Where do I start?
My husband has been gifted a Helly Hansen Odin Pro Shield Jacket with hood. It says on one of the many labels that it is a Bluesign PRODUCT which has been impregnated with PFC FREE DWR which apparently is better for the environment.
It is made of a lightweight material which has a smooth self check pattern on the outside, but a definite textured pattern on the inside. It can be machine washed up to 40 degrees, but the instructions say not to use fabric softener. The official description says ‘An innovative fusion of a softshell and fleece fabric, the Shield fleece delivers optimal breathability while also being weather and wind resistant as well as water-repellent.’ It also says ‘For all wet, cold or windy conditions Helly Tech will keep you dry, warm and confident.’ The seams are taped. The materials have been developed to meet the requirements of professionals no matter how demanding.
The zip goes from the bottom of the jacket right up to the hood which will keep the hood in place I would think right up to the chin. There is a toggle on the outside of the hood so it can be adjusted. It has a zipped pocket either side of the main zip.
The label says it has RECCO Advanced Rescue Technology so if you are lost outdoors or in the event of an avalanche accident the RECCO technology makes you more searchable to rescue professionals as there are reflectors which don’t require power. Apparently RECCO detectors are used worldwide by rescue professionals.
There is a card attached to the jacket which explains that ‘The ODIN collection has been made for and by those who live and work in the mountains. Designed in the pristine and unique outdoors of Norway every product has been tested by Helly Hansen’s professional guide partners.’
My husband loves the colour and fit of this jacket and the fact that it is so lightweight yet it keeps him warm and dry. He can easily pop it in a bag if he doesn’t want to wear it when he sets out in case it is needed later on an outing with our changeable weather and it doesn’t weigh heavily in his bag. I doubt my husband will be wearing the jacket in an avalanche, but it is great to know there are reflectors so if he takes the dog on a country walk and becomes lost he has a good chance of being seen.
Regardless of all the technical qualities of this jacket my husband loves it as a lightweight, waterproof jacket he can wear and rely on to keep him warm and dry. He has previously had a jacket which had a removable fleece but when put together were much heavier.
We have recently purchased a caravan so we are now doing much more walking in the countryside with the dog than we have ever done before using footpaths through fields or pavements beside roads, this jacket will be well used.
