Hape Hide-and-Seek Periscope Review

Reviewed by Debbie Talbot
As a parent who loves to enjoy family time outdoors with nature, I was delighted to be offered this Hape Hipe-and-Seek periscope for me and my children to review. It arrived in minimal packaging which is always a plus for me. It’s even manufactured from sustainable bamboo. The packaging design was really appealing.
My little boys could not wait to get started, so we went straight out into our back garden to explore. What fascinated me was how you can point one lens at an item you wish to see, but look at through the other lens. The items show up so clearly due to the fact that the lens magnifies each item by x 4. I think that I was just as excited as my twins. One twin is particularly interested in science and how things work, so this toy is ideal for him.
Whilst we have not found any rabbit and bird holes out on our family adventures, I can see how good this product would be for that purpose. Having the periscope has motivated my twins with their nature homework tasks from school. We have had hours of fun collecting creatures in their bug net, looking at them through the periscope and then placing them in their bug house before letting them go. Our next task is to go to a country park so we can have fun peering at each other over walls. A big positive is that the periscope is light to carry and the perfect size to slip into a child’s backpack still allowing plenty more space for other items. It even has a handy strap for you to attach it to whatever is convenient. This is perfect as there is less chance of it being lost and having disappointed little people.
In an age where it can be all too easy to spend hours playing console games or on other electronic devices, anything which encourages traditional play is welcomed by myself and no doubt many other parents. As a mum of boisterous twins, I do tend to look for quality items which will stand up to tough play. This toy has been played with numerous times now and looks good as new. The other thing I have noticed is how much conversation using the periscope brings about. We have had great fun discussing the various creatures which we have found out and about.
We are lucky enough to have a good number of Hape items in our household now and the quality of every single of those items is second to none. My little boys favourite item has to be their dolls house and a close second their marble runs. For those with younger children, there are some wonderful items in Hape’s range for babies & toddlers. I personally like the look of the Adjustable Telescope and the Nature Detective Set.
Many of the hours spent in our home are spent playing with Hape Toys, often with several at once.
The Hape Hide-and-Seek Periscope is a fun toy to get the kids outside playing in the fresh air, using their imaginations and exploring the world around them.
