Great Victorian Railway Journeys by Karen Farrington Review
How Modern Britain was Built by Victorian Steam Power

Reviewed by Charlotte Green
Having been a fan of steam trains and railways since a little girl, I was really looking forward to reading this book. Great Victorian Railway Journeys is a great tie-in book to the TV series Great British Railway Journeys. It is inspired by Bradshaw’s guide book and quotes from it regularly. It looks at how the tourist ‘hotspots’ in Britain have changed since the Victorian era and how the Victorians shaped today’s landscape. It has 5 main chapters, each one looking at a different railway journey from Bradshaw’s time. It gives a good insight into how each journey came into being and how the Victorians viewed them.
The actual railway content varies in each chapter but there is lots of interesting information given about all the places along each route, so this book will not only appeal to railway fans but also to anyone interested in Victorian Britain.
The design and photographs are of a very high quality and there are some really nice Bradshaw related maps.
A great book, fantastic tie-in to the TV series and would make a lovely gift.
