Last night a friend and I visited Liverpool’s Empire Theatre to watch Ghost The Musical, based on the iconic 1990 film. Both myself and my friend are big fans of the film so were looking forward to seeing this musical adaptation.

At the beginning of the show we met Molly, played by Rebekah Lowings, and Sam, played by Niall Sheet, a young couple completely in love. We also met their friend Carl played by Sergio Pasquariello. Molly and Sam seem to have it all until one fateful night Sam is killed during a street mugging, however Sam’s spirit does not pass onto the afterlife instead he stays here whilst coming to terms with his death. Sam soon discovers that his death wasn’t as random as it seemed, someone sent the mugger after him! In a chance encounter Sam comes across Oda Mae, a psychic who can hear him. He convinces Oda Mae to speak to Molly on his behalf.

Oda Mae was played by Jacqui Dubois who embodied the character perfectly adding a lot of humour and wit to what could otherwise be a very intense story. Another stand out actor for me was Lovonne Richards as the subway ghost.

Unfortunately I didn’t feel as invested with the other main characters, in the first scene particularly the acting felt very stiff and wooden, however it did improve as the show went on. Because the characters weren’t as believable, I didn’t get caught up in their parts which then affected my enjoyment of the rest of the show. It was hard to feel the emotion of the final few acts without the earlier character development. The ensemble cast who provided the backing dancing were superb and were a treat to watch.

Overall the show was enjoyable however it wasn’t the best performance I have seen and I wouldn’t rush to see it again.

Rating: 3/5
