Since childhood, I have been a lover of Roald Dahl and his magical tales, so was thrilled to hear that the Birmingham Stage Company were bringing their adaptation of George’s Marvellous Medicine to Cardiff. I thought they would struggle to recreate the magic of Dahl, however, the stage show was every bit as good as the book.

The storyline, for those not already familiar, revolves around a young lad, who lives on a rural farm with his mum and dad. Nothing exciting happens there, that is until grumpy and demanding Grandma comes to visit. Keen to transform gran into a fun-loving and endearing character, mischievous George, concocts a magic medicine…… and the magic begins!

My daughter, Poppy, aged 9, says “I thought the show was absolutely incredible. My favourite characters were George and Grandma. The best part was when George was making his medicine and all the audience joined in. We had a good laugh and everybody seemed to enjoy it.”

I would tend to echo Poppy’s thoughts. The audience participation went down well with younger members of the audience, it was great to see everybody so engaged.

The cast was small and the set simplistic, nonetheless, I was very impressed by the performance of all cast members. I would certainly recommend it, great family fun for young and old. Definitely worth a visit!!

Absolutely value for money and perfect for finishing off half term!
