Halloween night. A time of spooky spectacles and eerie lights casting shadows. But while humans revel in the thrills of trick-or-treating and chilling festivities, our four-legged companions can find the sudden noises, strange costumes and constant comings-and-goings unnerving. For many dogs and cats, the spooky chaos is a source of anxiety meaning owners need to be well-prepared and proactive in easing their pets’ fears.
While there’s plenty of advice circulating around people enjoying Halloween, online pet and veterinary supplies retailer Animed is sharing their expert guidance on how to keep pets calm and comfortable when the ghouls come out.

“Dogs and cats can be sensitive to Halloween’s unexpected noises, flashing decorations and masked visitors”, says Animed vet Jess Simmonds. “A little preparation and providing a safe retreat can make a world of difference. Keep an eye out for signs like restlessness, whining, hiding or pawing that signal your pet is feeling unsettled”.
Here are Jess’ Top Tips to help calm your pet this Halloween:
• Provide a safe, enclosed space such as a crate, den or quiet room where your pet feels secure
• Close windows, draw curtains and play gentle music to mask the sound of trick-or-treaters – Animed’s calming playlist on Spotify is perfect
• Preparation is key. Start using calming products like Zylkene or Beaphar calming tablets a few days before Halloween. These natural supplements help reduce anxiety without sedation
• Keep your pet indoors on Halloween night and ensure doors, windows and cat flaps are securely closed
• Make use of calming products if needed such as Pet Remedy spray to create a soothing environment. Products like the Feliway Diffuser for cats or Adaptil collars for dogs mimic natural calming signals and can help pets feel more secure
• I always recommend maintaining your pet’s usual exercise routine where possible. A good walk during daylight hours can help them feel more relaxed and tired in the evening, making it easier for them to settle and sleep through spooky disturbances
• If their anxiety is severe, speak to your vet for tailored advice or prescribed treatments
Make Halloween 2025 a safe and stress-free one for everyone, especially for the four-legged companions who would rather curl up in peace away from the howls in the night.
