So apparently it’s the summer holidays at the moment, I know this because I have two children at home all day every day and yet the glorious British weather still thinks it’s April with all of the rain.  When I was asked to review this kinetic sand I was delighted and over the moon, would this allow me to possibly have some time to myself to have a hot drink or even have a phone call without my delightful children having a screaming contest in the background.. let’s find out.

When it arrived I was very pleasantly surprised by the size of the box, it was large and was full of lots of accessories as well as four bags of kinetic sand (red, blue, yellow and black!).  It contains over ten different tools and molds so you can play, mix, shape, slice and squish.  Before they started, I opened the bags of sand and fluffed them, it is recommended and I told my children that I had to do it… just so I got to play with it before it all got mixed together.  The slightly ocd person inside me can’t stand when the different colours are mixed but I’ve learnt to live with it, the trade off of five minutes peace is worth it.

Among the tools is one which is like a dough cutter, obviously my children argued over who would get a turn with it but I have to admit, it is oddly satisfying to use it.  With the different coloured sand, they layered and mixed the colours which added another play element to this set.  The scoop is also a firm favourite (of mine) and was utilised in many role playing games they made up.  We had the kinetic sand set up in the garden under our event shelter so even with the wet weather they have had lots of time outside.  The kinetic sand is easily picked up so even if it does get dropped on the floor inside it won’t stain at all.  My children have an inability to keep the sand on the table so kinetic sand can be played with inside and out in our house.

Kinetic sand is a huge sensory play toy, it is perfect for creative and sensory play, it allows children to create anything they can imagine; then they can squish and squash it and start all over again.  My daughters had a favourite game of hiding things inside of the sand for the other one to find using the rake tool or their hands.  This is the perfect toy to give as a present or to receive as a mother.  Everyone can use it, you can leave it out and it doesn’t go ‘off’ unlike other sensory play items.  It doesn’t stain clothes or hands either.

My children are working on fine motor skills and this sand is allowing their hand muscles to develop, obviously in a very fun way.  If I told them it was good for them they wouldn’t play with it.

Over the last few days we have had the sand out a lot, I have actually left it out on our outdoor table and I am pleased to say it has enabled me to make a hot drink and drink it, I even read a magazine.  We have started to have friends round again and it has been a huge hit with their friends.

This is a must have toy, it is recommended for ages 3+ but as a 37 year old I can also highly recommend it.
