I always find shopping for new parents a little tricky, especially Christmas shopping! Which is why I want to sing the praises of this little steamer, which would make a practical and thoughtful gift.
Nutribullet is well known for their range of mixers and blenders aimed at those who are looking to improve or maintain their health. I have a Nutribullet blender already so had high expectations of their new steamer, designed for new parents going though the weaning stage. However, it’s not just the weaning stage where it comes in handy! It is a fab little steriliser too.
In the box is the steamer itself in two parts, the base for holding water and heating, a tray to cover where the water goes and the lid. It fits together easily and is very sturdy when stood on a flat surface because of it’s oval shape. I prefer it to be this shape as it’s much more sturdy and has less chance of toppling over if knocked slightly. The lid can be knocked off though if bumped into more roughly so just be aware when in use.
There is a very useful egg tray which holds eggs to be steamed in their shells. I love this feature as I could make eggs for the older children at the same time! It has two defrosting trays which sit nicely on top of the base. Very useful for defrosting those puree cubes from the freezer ready for baby. It did this quite well I thought and was certainly useful when I forgot to take things from the freezer in time to defrost in the fridge.
It comes with a steriliser tray. I do love the fact that it is a steam steriliser too, this means I do not have to have two extra units on the worktop taking up kitchen space. It isn’t big enough for huge bottles but you can fit in breast pump attachments, smaller bottles and teats, spoons and the like. It also has a handy, plastic measuring cup.
Most of the pieces are dishwasher safe, all pieces except the base unit with the electric connection. This makes it really easy to clean should there be any spillages or in the case of my littles, sticky, chocolaty hands trying to open the lid (obviously not when it was in use).
In the instruction leaflet you get a handy guide, with how many cups of water you need for each food and which setting to press on the pad on the base. There are five steam settings which is great because it means you can steam a variety of foods. The only thing I’d say is that it doesn’t hold a great deal of water so watch portion sizes, and the inside of the base needs to be wiped clean after use to help look after the heating element.
It is safe enough to steam meat, I did worry about this as I wasn’t sure it’d be strong enough to fully cook the meat through but it does! Nice and tender too just remember to cut it up first. Fish had a lovely finish on it too. Heating times vary and food does come out ridiculously hot. There is also a worry of steam scolding but as long as you wait until the food is finished before opening it’s all good. I loved I could set the timer and go about my other kitchen jobs then come back to it. Just make sure it is on a flat surface and make sure it is far back from the worktop edge, my 6 year old sometimes bounces around the kitchen and throws his bowl onto the worktop and this made me a little wary. Maybe a clip or some form of mechanism to make sure it couldn’t be moved would be a good idea.
This would make a lovely gift for a new parent or for Christmas. Practical, space saving and versatile. I don’t see how it wouldn’t be loved, it is certainly a lot easier to use and clean than steamers I have had for weaning in the past. I also love that it’s not just useful for weaning, you can steam good portion sizes of vegetables (and eggs) for older children and adults too. It’s great for those who need a softer diet, and for defrosting bits and bobs from the freezer when you only need a small amount, just pop it in the Nutribullet! A handful of blueberries, no problem, that small portion of cookie dough your little is insisting you use up that morning, go for it. MY older daughter sometimes struggles with swallowing foods so it is important for vegetables to be cooked through. We have loved this for her veg! So I think it would be very easily adapted for use with someone with additional needs. I love that it doesn’t look like its for babies only, it can be mistaken for a very sleek steamer, and a much safer way for some to cook eggs without needing a dangerous pan of water to watch.
Rating: I give this steamer 5 out of 5 stars. It did exactly what I wanted and needed it to!
