Evita at The Hawth Crawley Review

The Hawth in Crawley is easy to find and has a large amount of free car parking. It is a modern venue with large auditoriums. There are plenty of toilets, a cafe, restaurant and a number of bars for reasonably priced refreshments. The staff are always very helpful and friendly. What’s great about The Hawth is that there are no restrictive view seats in my opinion. Wherever you get seated you will get a great view of the stage. I’m never disappointed when I visit.

Evita is a story that depicts the life of Eva Perón, detailing her beginnings, rise to fame, marriage to the argentine dictator Perón, her political career, her immature death at the very young age of 33 in 1952 and how she became the spiritual leader of Argentina. This musical is by the infamous pairing that is Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. It was a massive hit on both stage and screen with Madonna playing Eva in the film adaptation.

This production was also in my humble opinion a massive hit. Starting so dramatically with the funeral of the iconic Eva Perón. The stage production and set pieces were so effectively and cleverly used that it flowed seamlessly from one scene to the next. It was a treat for the ears and the eyes. The whole thing captivated me from start to finish. In fact, I was so invested in what I was watching that I was a bit taken back when the curtain went up to signal the end of the first act. I’m not sure what it was, the magnificent acting, exquisite vocals or the demanding music. Maybe it was all three!

The three main stars were truly amazing, but they were accompanied by some extremely talented individuals that helped make the whole thing the success that it was. Glenn Carter as Che and Mike Sterling as Perón were spectacular. Then the icing on the cake was Lucy O’Byrne. Lucy was phenomenal, with the most amazing vocal range. Every moment that she was on stage was breathtaking to watch and listen to. Lucy commanded the attention of the whole audience and deserved the standing ovation that she received. I can’t quite find the right words to express how much I enjoyed myself and I hope this review gives you some insight in the treat that is in store if you buy tickets to go. I think it is a must see, go and be captivated!!

A breathtakingly beautiful production with a phenomenally talented cast depicting the life and story of the legendary Eva Perón. Totally deserving of 5 out of 5 stars and if it was possible I’d give more!

Rating: 5/5
