Derby Arena last night hosted The Elvis Tribute Artist World Tour featuring not one, not two but three of the world’s most acclaimed Elvis tribute artists. This space is perfect for showcasing such a show and paying homage to the legend that is Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and Roll and the diverse audience of all ages and genders were set to have a fantastic night.

First to the stage was the UK’s own Ben Thompson, who is 2018 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Champion. He embodied Elvis in his youth, delivering classic songs from his early years and capturing the spirit of Elvis perfectly. He had the looks, the brilliant vocals, but also the dance moves and charisma to match, and when he invited the ladies of the audience to visit the stage for a peck on the cheek, they were only too happy to oblige!

Moving swiftly on to the real fan favourite, from the USA, Dean Z, clad in a leather jumpsuit he resembles Elvis the Pelvis and charmed the crowd with that distinctive voice and all the moves that made Elvis a true heartthrob. The year was 1968 and he delivered all the classic hits, including Jailhouse Rock and All Shook Up with raw intensity. I think every woman in the arena was clamouring for a kiss when he put the request out and he even came into the audience dancing over chairs and having ladies swoon at his feet.

The finale, after an interval (which we all needed to cool down after the first half!) saw Shawn Klush who was featured as Elvis in his later years. He still had the same amazing voice and stage presence but was a bit slower and perhaps a little jaded. Klush was Winner of BBC TV’s ‘World’s Greatest Elvis’ and Elvis Presley Enterprises ‘First Ever’ Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist contest and you can see why as he encapsulated the grandeur of Elvis’s Las Vegas era, complete with iconic jumpsuit. He didn’t offer kisses but instead silk scarves were handed out to delighted audience members who visited the stage.

The production was further elevated by a live band and orchestra, delivering a rich and authentic sound that complemented each performance. The lighting and stage design were meticulously crafted, enhancing the overall experience without overshadowing the performers.

At the end all three Elvis’s united on stage for the ultimate fan’s dream and a large percentage of the audience were up on their feet dancing the night away with their idol to round up a dazzling, polished and passionate show.

The whole production was an incredible journey reflecting the magnificent career of Elvis Presley from people who are determined to keep his memory alive in the best way. Nostalgia, energy, sex appeal, and true talent combined to showcase the spirit of an icon. It certainly felt like the spirit of Elvis was alive with us!

Rating: 5/5

There are a few remaining shows on this tour, and any fan of Elvis or even live music in general is guaranteed a brilliant night out honouring this icon.
