I was very excited to be asked to review one of my all time favourite movie classics, Dirty Dancing, who are currently on tour at the Waterside Theatre in Aylesbury. Let’s just say it certainly didn’t disappoint.

The Waterside Theatre is a lovely theatre with lots of character situated in the heart of Aylesbury. Surrounded by plenty of choice of bars and restaurants. Perfect for an evening out!

Parking was easy, with a car park just across the road directly opposite the theatre, which was convenient to say the least. I took along my husband, who was pleasantly surprised on how easy the theatre was to find, with no fuss.

As we entered the theatre foyer we could see it was buzzing with lots of people excited to see the show. We also noticed Dirty Dancing merchandise for sale, which was all reasonably priced. The staff were friendly and helpful as we collected our tickets.

We then made our way to the bar which was situated just across from the foyer. It was very busy so as expected there was a bit of a wait for drinks, but the staff were working hard to serve everyone as quickly as possible. We were then shown to our seats by a very friendly member of staff. Our seats were comfortable with lots of leg room and we had a terrific view. Then the theatre started to fill up rapidly.

The story of Dirty Dancing is set in America in the summer of 1963. 17 year old Daddy’s girl Francis ‘Baby’ Houseman played by the brilliant Katie Hartland goes on holiday with her family. She falls in love with Johnny Castle played by the very talented Lewis Griffiths and learns some major life lessons, as well as some great dance moves along the way.

From start to finish the show had us gripped. The music throughout gave me goosebumps. The singing, acting and dancing was flawless. You couldn’t help but notice the energy. The dance moves were brilliant especially the lifts. The 1960’s costumes were stunning with not a single detail left out. The stage scenery was fantastic. Clever special effects were used with holograms and lightening, it was mesmerising. Not forgetting the special effects used with Johnny and Baby practising their dance moves in the water, that was very impressive.

By the end the audience were up on their feet singing, dancing and clapping. The atmosphere was amazing! It was great to see such a talented cast get a well-deserved standing ovation at the end.

This was definitely the best show I have seen. Go see it, you will not be disappointed. I want to go again!

Rating: 5/5 thumbs_up
