Dinosaur Zoo is described as “Puppet-tastic! Thoroughly entertaining. A Delight!” After reading this I was really excited about going to see it and taking my Godson. We went to the Milton Keynes Theatre in Milton Keynes. There was ample pay and display parking nearby but we actually parked near the shopping centre and walked through to the theatre. The theatre was clean, welcoming and child friendly. We were met on the door by two staff members who cheerfully greeted Benny and I. The programme cost £3 and had dinosaur activities, information, and opened out into a huge Dinosaur poster! The toilets were lovely and clean and easy to find.
The show started with an introduction by Lindsey, who hosted the show. She was enigmatic and easily engaged both children and adults in the audience. She encouraged audience participation and got us all roaring like dinosaurs and holding the protective stance (arms up in a cross, think X-Men, to protect our heads from being eaten by the dinosaur!). There were several interactive moments where young members of the audience were brought up onto the stage, and also a dad at one point. The puppets were amazing. Benny particularly liked the massive one at the end! The puppeteers were highly skilled and I had to remind Benny they were just puppets.
At one point the puppeteers came out into the audience with the flying Meganeuras (they look like giant Dragonflies). They swooped down over our heads, and the children in the audience loved it! There was the perfect balance of educational information and humour, perfectly delivered by Lindsey. My favourite dinosaur was the Australovenator, the carnivore. It was amazing to watch it moving and there was an interactive element where a child was chosen from the audience to help remove its tooth as it had toothache. One hilarious moment was when one audience member had to pretend to be a tree to get away from it! The last dinosaur we saw was absolutely massive. The puppeteer controlled its head. It looked breathtakingly real, and slightly scared Benny, who on the way home decided it was his favourite, and couldn’t stop talking about it! After the performance there was a ‘Meat and Greet’ in the foyer where we were able to interact with a couple of the dinosaurs. Benny found this a little scary so we only stayed to see the baby one.
A ‘roaring’ time was had by Benny and myself! Dinosaur Zoo is currently on tour, and I recommend you catch it if you can!!
