As orange is the new black, gin, it seems, is the new alcoholic drink, with people of all ages and walks of life choosing a nice cool gin instead of the traditional beer, whiskey or bitter. So, with its popularity and varieties spanning the globe nowadays there are a vast range of gin types and tastes to meet the increasing demand. I am a gin drinker who likes a gin ‘now and again’ but am trying new varieties to enable me to explore this alcoholic phenomenon further. Having the opportunity to taste 4 very different gins by the UK company ‘Didsbury’ was an offer I couldn’t resist. The flavours are described as bright, vibrant and zesty gins. The 4 x 5cl bottles included original, raspberry & elderflower, blood orange and ginger and strawberry and Sicilian lemon. These flavours are unique and unusual.

The trial was 4 small bottles, being able to buy gins in small bottles gives a family the opportunity to try different flavours and to be a bit more adventurous without spending £20 or so on a full bottle.

The original gin was crisp and clear, bright and refreshing that easily was drank with a touch of cool tonic water.

The raspberry and elderflower flavour was – as my husband put it- ‘absolutely divine’ with subtle tastes that danced on the tongue and he will be tasting that again very soon – no doubt! It isn’t sharp at all and its fruitiness made the drink very palatable and tasty, I drank this with only a little splash of tonic water as I liked this ‘bite’ of the gin alone, it was very moreish with just the additional of an ice cube chunk.

The orange and ginger gin was our least favourite which was surprising as we both love ginger and it reminded us of a type of cough medicine. I am sure that this will be enjoyed by those who like a more exotic tasting gin.

Finally, the strawberry and lemon gin was the nicest to drink and had a fantastic aroma of strawberries followed by a rush of lemons that once on the tongue reminded us on strawberry bonbons! Delicious!

We loved both the strawberry and the raspberry ones very much and will be looking out for these for our Christmas evenings in. The four drinks were all enjoyable, each totally different and gave an evening in, on these dark nights, an air of decadence. It is refreshing in more ways than one to find a UK distillery that makes such lovely gins. I will look for Didsbury gins when I am out and buy this gin with some light tonic water and limes for when I’m home- I am sure that these bottles will be a great addition to any drinks cabinet. I will definitely be buying Didsbury gins again! The cost of the pack of four gins is only £15.99 compared to a full bottle at £30, so the mini bottle pack would make a lovely present from Santa! The slogan for Didsbury gin is – the spirit of life’ and I couldn’t agree more.
