David Lloyd Warrington Spa Facilities Review

Reviewed by Lucy Gwilliam

We recently spent our Sunday afternoon testing out the new updated facilities at David Lloyd in Warrington. The leisure centre has renovated and improved a number of the areas within the complex and it was a pleasure to be able to try them out.

We had booked in for a day pass for myself and my husband and arrived to a well-spaced car park. We explained our visit to reception staff and they quickly notified the manager who came to greet us.

The manager was very efficient and showed us around the whole building, explaining what was new and the reasoning behind the improvements. He was very approachable and explained things clearly and we got good vibes from him.

The first thing that was new was the “dead space” at the rear of the building, this had been given a new lease of life and a new children’s wooden play area, football pitch and outdoor battle box area, which offers boot camp style classes. This area leads off from the restaurant’s outdoor seating area and it’s a perfect addition to the family friendly club.

Leaving the outdoor space and returning to the restaurant, there is an indoor soft play area, an amazing interactive games table and an extremely relaxing and spacious eating area. The whole place is free flow and designed ideally for an active family.

Once we had made our way out of the restaurant, we were shown the gym and swimming areas before testing them out for ourselves. We were shown to the changing areas by the manager and then we made our way to the gym.

The gym is state of the art and a really good size yet with plenty of equipment to suit anybody from newbie to gym bunny. My husband and I are complete opposites when it comes to exercise, he is an absolute gym addict and I push myself to go whenever I can fit it into my busy lifestyle.

I made my way to the cardio section, starting with the cross trainer, then moving onto the bike, spending around 40 minutes on the two. The thing I enjoyed most was that I could log into my Netflix account and watch my favourite shows. My husband however, started off in the weights section. We then teamed up and worked with the battle ropes, medicine balls and other equipment.

The equipment is vast and very high quality. It really does have a high end feel to it and it is totally different to any other gym I have been to. There is a Blaze workout area which uses state of the art technology to deliver workout classes and track you progress directly to you. In addition, there is a small hall at the rear of the gym where classes can take part. While we were there, there was a children’s class about to start.

Once we had exerted the gym facilities, we returned to the changing rooms to change into our swimwear. There is a female changing room, male changing room and a family changing rooms. This is such a good selling point as being a mum to two small children, it can be quite difficult getting children changed on your own if you go as a family. I like that there was an option.

Once we had showered, we met up again in the jacuzzi in the indoor pool. It was a good size, comfortably fitting 5 people and the temperature was lovely and warm. We stayed for a few minutes before trying out the indoor pool. This was a lovely temperature and had a family swim on, with an adult lane swim sectioned off. We didn’t stay in the indoor pool long as we were excited to try the spa garden.

The spa garden is a stunning outdoor space with a hydro pool, sauna and a seating area with a fire that never goes out! The hydro pool was actually stunning and so relaxing! Just what I needed after a very stressful working week. I felt refreshed when we emerged. The weather wasn’t great and was raining lightly when we were in the hydro pool but that didn’t affect us at all and when you’re wet, it doesn’t really matter if you’re getting rained on. The temperature was lovely and it was such a novelty to enjoy this experience.

After the hydro pool we tried the sauna within the spa garden. We didn’t stay long as neither of us really like saunas as I feel claustrophobic. We then decided to brave the outdoor pool. Wow I was so shocked at how refreshing it was and actually how warm the water was. We stayed quite a while in this pool as we were the only ones in it. We also experienced the outdoor jacuzzi too.

Once we were all swam out, we got changed and decided to have a game of tennis. However, I am absolutely dreadful at tennis and I was starving by this point, so it didn’t really last long. We were impressed with the courts though and how they are laid out. It is a great space and it is utilised well.

It was now time to experience the menu and I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of healthy options on the menu. We had a quick look at what other people were eating and then decided on Moroccan chicken flatbread for myself and a protein salad for my husband. We didn’t wait too long for food to arrive and the price was good value. Once it arrived, we were impressed with the presentation and with the taste of the food.

Now we were fed and exercised, it was time to leave and go back to being responsible parents. We had a great day and it was a great experience to try out a leisure club that I had never visited before. It was definitely a more bespoke experience than anything I had ever been to previously.

Overall, taking everything from our visit into account, we were extremely impressed with the facilities. I also loved the family aspect of the club, they offer so much for families, from crèche facilities to classes and craft sessions, all in addition to the fixed facilities at the gym. We would definitely consider joining here as a family as it would suit our busy lifestyle and it is just a really nice place to visit. I would rate this experience 5 out of 5.
