Crunch! by Carolina Rabei Review

Reviewed by Kirsten Boyd

Crunch! is a book about a guinea pig. Which I thought was nice, as you don’t often find many books about guinea pigs. This guinea pig loves his food. He spends his days eating and getting fat. But he finds himself oddly dissatisfied. He wonders if there may be more to life than filling his tummy.

Then Cheddar comes along. He wants some of Crunch’s food. Aghast that he should be expected to share his food Crunch defends it, shuns Cheddar’s offer of friendship in return and shoos the hungry mouse away to find his own.

He finishes his substantial meal in peace but starts to feel odd. He realises he feels guilty about shooing Cheddar away and starts to imagine what horrors might befall him whilst he looks for some grub. Beginning to comprehend there might be more to life than food and unable to live with the torment any longer Crunch does something he’s never done before and breaks free, searching high and low for poor Cheddar. Is it too late? Will Crunch find him and make a new friend? What will he make of the world outside his hutch?

A charming and well-illustrated tale about greed and potential consequence with the ubiquitous moral and happy ending. Predictable perhaps, but it’s a children’s story. Anything else would be absurd. Plus it has a guinea pig.

My 3 year old loves this book and my 10 month old has tried to eat it several times, which is a sign of approval.
