Crazy for You at the King’s Theatre Glasgow Review

17-21 October 2017

We arrived at the King’s Theatre for the opening night of Crazy for You. The staff were very welcoming, carrying out a quick bag check at the entrance.

Our seats were in row E of the Grand Circle which offered us an excellent view of the stage.

The stage was set behind a transparent curtain before the show opened with an instrumental solo.

It begins backstage at the Zangler Theatre in New York where the Follies are rehearsing. Bobby eventually attracts Bela Zangler’s attention long enough to audition although unsuccessful. We then meet his draconian mother, the head of the Bank where Bobby works. He is caught between a rock and a hard place between his mother and fiancé of five years Irene (Caroline Flack).

So, when his mother sends him to Deadrock to foreclose on a theatre and make something of himself, he gladly heads off to Nevada.

Arriving rather confused from dehydration at the country bar, Bobby sets eyes on and falls in love with Polly played by Charlotte Wakefield.

Very quick Bobby discovers the theatre he is there to foreclose on belongs to Polly and her father. Instead of carrying out his mother’s wishes Bobby decides to help save the theatre but Polly is not convinced so Bobby pretends to be Mr Zangler complete with accent and goatee and he enlists the help of the Follies.

Although he succeeds in producing a show no one turns up to the remote town to see it but the real Bela Zangler does appear causing confusion as Polly has fallen in love with imposter version of Zangler. But at the end of the day, love conquers all!!

Based on the book by Ken Ludwig with music and lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin, Crazy for You has a fabulous musical score. My favourite scene was the hilarious mirroring act with Bobby and Zangler.

The show is full of humour, wholesome humour that is very much in the timing and delivery especially for Tom Chambers (Bobby). All the music with in the show is played live on stage by the cast.

Crazy for You is a very entertaining and up lifting show. A great way to spend a dreich autumnal evening. It plays at the King’s Theatre until 21st October.
