When I was first asked to review Constellations at the Theatre Royal in Brighton my first reaction was “Yay, it has Molly from Sherlock in it”. My husband and I are big Sherlock fans, my second reaction was “Oh it is on the same day the two brightest planets, Venus and Jupiter, are to appear in the sky so close together they will resemble the star of Bethlehem, it’s that cool?” and my third reaction was “I really hope it isn’t too hot in the theatre!”.
So on the day we went along it was in fact hot! Very, very hot! The theatre didn’t seem too overheated when we arrived which was a plus and with a bar at each level there were places to buy drinks if you needed.
Once inside the room, I noticed all the balloons on the stage which I really liked. We were in the Royal Circle which I actually prefer as I feel a little closed in the stalls sometimes.
As for the play, I loved it! What more can I say? It has all the things I love. A love story with a difference, something from levels and places which showed a real and raw tale. How differently would our lives be if we had said or done something different and the idea of us living out many lives in different parallel universes is beautiful as Marianne so wonderfully says “When my time here has ended, it doesn’t mean your time with me has”, how stunningly amazing is that to think? that our time is endless. Nothing is really ever gone or lost, we are with each other always.
The two actors were outstanding together, such great chemistry I felt it was remarkable they were able to remember all their lines and when to say them with no confusion. They brought such a realness to their roles, you could believe fully they were who they said they were in all parallel universes they felt very present and there.
A breath-taking play about how we can fall in love, fall out of it and we can be so many different things to each other in so many different ways.
Towards the end of the play I began to feel too hot and slightly sick with the heat, the usher in the room let me out into the hall and took me through to the bar for a large glass of water and let me stand out on the balcony for air this really helped me and was wonderful service, she again asked how I was once the play had ended and I was ready to leave, I have always experienced such positive care from the staff at the Theatre Royal.
Make sure you watch this in all your parallel universes you won’t regret it!
