Since having my third child I have only been able to wear sanitary pads as opposed to tampons, and have to admit that the idea of period pants scares me a little; will they leak? Will they smell? Will they stain?
For me, night-time is difficult as I always leak with sanitary towels, even when I wear two, so a win for me would be to be able to remove the bath towel which I have to sleep on during my period.
When these Modibodi pants arrived I have to say they looked enormous, and I was sure that the sizing was wrong. However once they were on the fit was perfect, as I am always a size 12. I guess I am not used to a full brief but I would advise this style for night-time wear as it does provide a full coverage and protection, even if you do usually prefer a smaller style.
Initial reactions were how comfortable and light they felt when on, much better than wearing a pad. I was also glad that despite the lilac outer colour, the inner padded portions were black. The padding reaches right up the back portion to the elasticated top, and up the front section to above the area that a pad would usually stop, so you are covered if you move a lot in your sleep. They do come in other colours too, just make sure that you wash them before use as this apparently activates the “magic powers” of the product.
On my heaviest day I wore these pants with a night-time pad, whereas I usually need two differently positioned pads which isn’t the most comfortable approach. Wearing the pants felt much nicer. The next morning there was no leakage, and I also noticed that everything was contained within the pad and pants, rather than seeping onto my inner thigh (apologies for the detail but I feel this is a good point to know).
The pants are made from bamboo which is breathable and means you don’t get the same sweaty feeling that you experience with a towel.
For night-time I don’t yet have the confidence to wear these pants alone on my heavy days (remember I’m a two-pad girl at night!) but this is not due to the product performance, simply my own comfort. I will absolutely use these alone without pads when I am lighter, as my two trials with them were so comfortable and I had no leaks.
The downside is that I need more pairs as soon as possible! These have solved a real problem for me during night-time as I am now more comfortable and don’t need to worry about leaks, but I also want to try some smaller pants to wear without pads on my lighter days as I like the idea of feeling more comfortable and not seeing the shape of a pad if I wear anything tight.
My daughter has recently started her period and I feel these will give her real confidence particularly at bedtime, during her sporting activities and when wearing more fitted clothes. They make a lovely stocking filler as they have a practical use. To be honest I have a few friends who would appreciate these at Christmas.
This product is also suitable if you are prone to bladder leakage, which again is much more appealing than using a thick pad which moves around makes you sweat.
The RRP on this item is £25, which seems a lot for a pair of pants, but you are saving on the cost of sanitary towels potentially and they are much better for the environment. I do squirm when I throw a sanitary towel away and think of the waste. Plus, these aren’t your everyday pants, they have a practical function, which your £15 pair of posh pants do not! So it is a fair price, and you get what you pay for as these do work.
It is recommended that you rinse the product in cold water after wearing them until the water runs clear, then use a cold wash. This can be a little inconvenient if you don’t wash at low temperatures often or don’t want to risk staining your other clothes. In theory if you rinse them well after use you should be able to wait until you have a few pairs stored so that you can wash them together to keep water and energy costs down.
They do take a while to dry due to the padding, but it isn’t an issue.
I loved these period pants, and to answer my initial questions… no they don’t leak, I’m pretty sure that I don’t smell and so far (following the correct washing instructions) they haven’t stained. The added bonus is that my bedtime bath towel is a thing of the past. I would award the Modibodi full brief heavy overnight absorbency pants 5 stars out of 5.
