‘The greatest pantomime of them all’ claims the Mayflower theatre in Southampton and we literally couldn’t agree more!
My husband and I went along to the theatre with our daughter, Bella aged 7 and son Owen aged 8 to watch Cinderella starring Brian Conley at Buttons and Gok Wan as the Fairy Gokmother, and we all had the most wonderful time.
The theatre was buzzing from start to finish with a Christmassy atmosphere that enchanted us all. The staff were very welcoming and knowledgeable about the theatre and the performance itself. Our seats were located on the top balcony which was a long way from the stage but we could still all see perfectly.
Brian Conley played his role as Buttons fantastically with both my husband and I frequently belly laughing at his jokes and humour. Our daughter Bella was crying with laughter when Buttons was on stage and our son thoroughly enjoyed his magic tricks that had us all baffled and entertained.
The rest of the cast were just as fantastic with singing, dancing and acting that out did any other pantomime that we have ever seen.
The magic was really brought to life when Charlie the trick horse was introduced. Charlie is a real horse that has to be seen to be believed! He had us all fascinated and quite literally speechless by his talents… what a beautiful, enchanting addition to the performance. Hats off to the trainer to be able to teach a horse to perform so well.
The audience participation with water pistols, songs and banter was another highlight ensuring that we were all entertained and that children of all ages stayed engaged. This along with the incredible and rather sparkly set, colourful lights, fabulous costumes, modern music and the most talented cast really did make this pantomime very special indeed.
I would highly recommend going even if you don’t have any children. The performance really is for all ages and will be thoroughly enjoyed by all.
Owen aged 8 said: “My favourite bit was the end”. We should point out that this was not because the pantomime had ended as we first thought. He went on to explain… “When they brought the kids onto stage and starting telling jokes, it was very funny!”
Bell aged 7 said: “My favourite bits were the singing and the awesome costumes. I also really loved Charlie the horse. I wish I could see him again”
