Cannizaro House Wimbledon Review

My husband and I stayed at Cannizaro House, Wimbledon in January 2015 for one night. We had a suite. It was a good large size with large windows and views out to the lawns which would have been pleasant had it not been raining! The huge bed was very comfortable. Both rooms had a large TV with Freeview and Sky. Complimentary sherry was provided as was some delicious shortbread. Various teas were available alongside a cafetière and expresso machine. The bathroom had all the usual toiletries, bath robes a large bath and an incredibly good rain shower with changing coloured lights! It was very spacious too which is quite unusual. The rooms were all spotlessly clean. There is a turn down service when biscuits are replenished!

The hotel is situated in its own grounds including a formal garden which I’m sure in nicer weather and in the Summer is attractive. Bicycles and outdoor games for all the family are available. You can sit in the restaurant looking out to these grounds giving you a nice view while you eat. Ample and easy parking. We arrived Saturday evening thanks to traffic in south London (don’t believe the route planners times if you are crossing across London) and there were plenty of spaces. If an event was on there is also off-road parking just outside the grounds.

The restaurant is still listed on the website and the hotel’s promotional literature as having a 2AA rosette, in actual fact it now has 3 and rightfully so as the food was superb. We were greeted at the entrance and then seated. My first course was smoked salmon mousse, wasabi and lime jelly and tapioca cracker. Beautifully smooth and tasty. For the second course I had miso glazed pig’s cheeks, truffled Mac ‘n’ cheese por popcorn. It was a gorgeous meal. The meat was so tender and tasty and the cheese with macaroni was generous and very, very cheesy! Extra vegetables to share were cooked to perfection. For dessert I had chocolate, pistachio crunch, raspberry and white chocolate ice cream. This was delicious! For those of a certain age there was something that tasted like a soft version of a raspberry Tutti Fruitti!

My husband had wild boar filleted, pineapple chutney, five spice crumb which was full of gamey flavour. For the main course he had the Scottish onglet steak, pomme anna purple sprouting broccoli, roasted shallot jus. Cooked to perfection, the slow cook ensured a very tender flavoursome medium steak. The potato complimented the meat well. For dessert he had the cherry crumble, vanilla seed ice-cream with walnut snow. This was a perfect balance of sweet and sharp.

There is an extensive wine list to suit all tastes and price range. We asked questions about the food before choosing and the waitress was knowledgeable and helpful. The service was attentive without being obtrusive. The meals were from a set menu and extremely good value.

For breakfast there was a range of fruit juices, fruit and cereals. I had the continental with 4 different pastries and toast. I was too full up from the night before to eat all of it! My husband had the full English which was good.

Arrival and booking out procedures were simple, quick and polite. We would thoroughly recommend a stay here and will probably return. We would like to visit when we could make the most of the grounds in the Summer! Although the hotel provides wellies to explore the park and Wimbledon Common we still didn’t fancy it!

Rating: 5/5 thumbs_up
