Breakout Manchester: Infiltrate Room Review

Reviewed by Louise Totton

I was absolutely delighted to be asked to go along to Breakout Manchester to try out their latest game room. To describe exactly what Breakout is really isn’t easy (and a few people have asked me to do so). In a nutshell, you select your game room and a time, go along at the appointed time, are locked in the chosen game room, and you have to work out how to escape from the room.

All of the rooms have a specific theme, the Infiltrate room is set in a maximum security ward, and we had exactly one hour to extract the information required from the room in order to solve a massive crime and escape the room.

Our initial contact with Breakout was via the website. Here, you can look at all of the different rooms, which are rated by difficultly. You can the select the theme and difficulty level that most appeals to you and your group. The price depends on the number of participants (2-5) and the time of day you select. We selected Infiltrate, which is rated at 3/5 for difficultly, and we decided to make an evening of it, so booked the 9pm slot.

We parked near the Phones4U arena and walked the 10 or 15 minutes into central Manchester where Breakout is situated. Whilst not brilliantly signposted, the address and directions provided on the website made it easy enough to find.

We went inside and up the stairs to wait for our game to start. Alex introduced herself, went through a brief synopsis of the plot as well as what the rules, safety rules and a few other bits. She made sure everyone understood what they were doing and lead us to the room, locked us in and started the timer.

All I can say about the game is we had fabulous fun! It was challenging and very frustrating at times. It required some serious thinking outside of the box on occasion. All the time, the television screen counted down our hour. Occasionally, (presumably if we looked stuck), a siren sounded and a hint or clue would appear on the screen, which would either point us in the right direction, or confirm what we were already doing.

We did manage to escape from the room, although towards the end, we thought we might not manage it! We had just 1m 19s left, but we did it.

I would strongly recommend Breakout to almost anyone. In spite of being locked in a room, it isn’t claustrophobic. There were four of us, and I would suggest that was about right. It would be a fabulous team building or getting to know you type activity.

I’m not sure what else I can say without giving the game away too much! A brilliant evening, something truly different to a run of the mill day or night out. I would be delighted to visit again, and maybe try a slightly harder room. Absolutely fantastic.

Rating: 5/5
