Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Aladdin at The Lowry Manchester Review

20-23 September 2017

Reviewed by Lucy Gwilliam

I absolutely love the ballet, so when I heard the Birmingham Royal Ballet would be visiting The Lowry in Salford, Manchester to showcase their version of the classic tale of Aladdin, I was enthralled. I couldn’t wait to go and see it!

We arrived on the opening night (20 September 2017) to a packed-out audience, all just as excited as I was to see the show. The atmosphere was buzzing and I was taking in from the first scene of act 1.

The story of Aladdin is one of my favourites and this adaptation truly does the story justice. With 3 acts in total, including 2 intervals, it was not rushed in any way. The show was around 2½ hours long.

The performance sees a young Aladdin who meets The Maghrib, who sends Aladdin into a cave to retrieve an old lamp. In the cave, Aladdin is mesmerised by the beautiful jewels: onyx, pearls, gold, silver, sapphires, rubies, emeralds and diamond. All played beautifully by the spectacular dancers of the show. This was one of my favourite parts of the show.

Aladdin refuses to pass the lamp to The Mahgrib, so he slams the door and locks him in. He tries to light the lamp and is transported magically by the Djinn of the lamp to his mother, who has been worried sick.

The ballet shows Aladdin journey to meet the princess and their problems later on with The Mahgrib and how they overcome this.

The costumes were spectacular and by far the most mesmerising I have seen in a live performance. The set design and special effect were also excellent.

The whole performance was wonderful. The dancing, without a doubt was perfect.

We truly had an amazing night, a perfect way to spend our anniversary. I would definitely recommend this to a friend and would rate it 5 out of 5.

Rating: 5/5
