I absolutely hate cleaning. With a strong and unswerving dedication and passion! I will actively avoid it until it becomes clear I have no choice but to do something about it or risk the wrath and judgement of the visitors that never come to my house (don’t get me wrong, I don’t really want visitors, but the threat of their potential in the future keeps me at least vaguely focused!). I tend to use whichever cleaning products I have to hand, which hopefully smell nice, but I don’t often give a huge amount of thought to what I’m adding to the environment in terms of chemicals as I just want whatever I use to work. I work full time and have two kids, and 8 hairy pets, so I have not enough time plus too much mess to contend with! I need something that works quickly, effectively, and smells nice.
So, when I was sent the Bio One 100% natural deep clean and surface cleanser starter kit, I was hopeful that it may help to change some of my admittedly slightly lazy habits. The kit comes in a recyclable box (good start!) which is printed in natural muted colours; it contains a bottle of concentrate which makes up 2.75 litres of cleaner in total, a spray bottle, and a pink microfibre cloth. The instructions printed on the bottle say to mix 10mls of concentrate with 100mls of water, or use the markings on the spray bottle. This foxed me a little as the markers on the spray bottle show 25/250mls, so I had to show someone else before I could do the maths to work out that it was a 1:10 ratio of concentrate to water. The instructions could have been a little clearer in that regard. I also checked on the website, and that said to mix 12mls of concentrate with 100mls of water, that the bottle makes up 2.1L, and to leave to dry naturally, so the information available is unfortunately inconsistent.
The instructions also say to simply shake and spray generously on surfaces. It is then again unclear how long you should leave it for, implying that you should leave it for 5-10 minutes, however that could just be for use on soft furnishings, which are mentioned at the same time. If you’re supposed to leave it that long on hard surfaces then it won’t be that useful for a very busy household because if you’re like me, you want something that will do the job quickly and effectively, with the least amount of effort involved.
For the purposes of testing it out, I did leave it on the surfaces I was trying for around 10 minutes. The bottle indicates that the naturally activated bio enzymes will work as long as they are damp, and also that the cleanser is the 100% natural way to deep clean, degrease and cleanse surfaces around the home, including kitchens, fridges, ovens, cooker hoods, stainless steel, bathrooms, toilets and so on. I therefore mainly tried it on my kitchen, using it on the worktops, the hob, the stainless steel splashback and cooker hood, and the sink. Once you have left the cleanser to do its work, you wipe it away with a damp cloth and then buff with the included pink microfibre cloth. I found that the cleanser worked well on the hob, sink and worktops, however I didn’t see much of an effect on the stainless steel which I was hoping would polish up. The cloth is a good size, and very soft, so does work to help dry up the damp surfaces, however the cleaner was not effective, for me, on stainless steel. I did try it a few times, just to be sure, and had the same outcome. My glass induction hob was however very shiny afterwards so I think it would also do well as a cleaner for glass, and I’m looking forward to seeing if it is can take off the dog nose marks from my doors!
I also braved cleaning the inside glass of my oven door, which was frankly horrible. I sprayed it very generously with the cleaner and then left it sitting flat for longer than 10 minutes before attempting to clean it. It certainly made it easier to clean, but I still had to use a scourer and could not get it completely clean so again it didn’t appear completely up to the job of dealing with a greasy oven door. Perhaps it would work if I repeated the process a few times. I can however now see into my oven so that is a bonus!
The cleaner was nicely scented with pink grapefruit which smelled lovely, so I’d be happy to continue using it but probably for the less intense cleaning jobs. It’s a bonus that you have enough concentrate to make up 2.75L so it will last for quite some time. The product is vegan, pet friendly, eco friendly and made in Britain. The website states the cleanser “Permanently eliminates odours using naturally activating bio enzymes. Bio one™ targets odour at the source naturally, removing bad bacteria permanently, leaving your home smelling clean and fresh”.
