Electric blankets are now part of many households and are no longer stereotyped as only for those over a certain age. As the cold wintery days seem to already have arrived I was very grateful to receive the Bedsure Heated Blanket Electric Throw to review. It arrived vacuum packed so wasn’t too big a parcel with no excess packaging. Instructions were included and it was easy to connect the charging cable and set up.

I first noticed how soft the blanket was, especially the additional fleece inner layer (apparently the ‘hypoallergenic plush layer) which made it pretty cosy even without turning on. I received the striped grey, which is one of twelve colour options. They are all plain colours (including navy, red, cream, green) so not much to dislike, however I would have loved to have seen a modern pattern option too (such as a black and white Aztec design perhaps).

Since receiving it I have been regularly using both whilst working from home in the day, and then on the bed at night. I got a single size version measuring 130 by 160cm however I couldn’t see whether or not there are other size options and I wonder if some people may feel it is a little small for larger beds. The size is actually great for me as I can actually easily use it over my lap whilst sat at my desk. There are 6 different temperature levels and for me setting 3 or 4 is lovely and warm but it was great to know that if needed I could go up a level or 2. I was surprised how hot it actually got, and indeed it does advise that if using for a long time it is used at a low level.

One of my favourite features is the preheat function that allows you to warm up your bed prior to getting in. I’ve only been turning this on and using for a little while whilst I get ready for bed and It’s made such a difference (no more bedsocks needed!). The wires are (according to the website) upgraded in their technology compared to many other electric blankets, and allow a ‘rapid-response’ heating which my experience would certainly fit with. It seems to then really keep the heat in the bed, even though the top of the blanket doesn’t feel warm to the touch once turned off and cooled and I think this must be due to the ‘thermal sherpa insulation.’

The timer function allows the blanket to be set to turn off at 10 different hourly intervals. I personally haven’t felt the need to use it overnight yet (beyond the preheat setting) however this feature would enable a good level of control of the warmth during the night and hopefully provide piece of mind that the blanket will automatically turn off after the set time period.

One thing that surprised me was that the blanket itself is machine washable at 30 degrees (just disconnect the cable first) which is a great design feature for frequent use or to ensure any spills or marks are fully cleaned. I have yet to try this but hope that the softness of the blanket remains as well the colour which is stated as fade resistant during washing.

Safety wise, Bedsure state that they have tested the safety of their blankets beyond the required level. Features such as auto cut offs for use over 8 hours as the timer settings for overnight use also add to the safety element of this blanket.

For most of us the use of heating over winter has to be carefully managed due to cost. Using this blanket definitely helps and is a cost effective way to stay warm. I’ve certainly found working from home far more manageable when home alone and not feeling able to justify putting the heating on.

There are lots of offers on for winter/Christmas at the moment so this would indeed make a great bargain gift for someone (and allows you to consider getting yourself one too!).
