Snow White
The Lowry, Manchester
5-6 December 2015
Review by Lucy Gwilliam
This enchanting adaptation of the classic Brothers Grimm fairytale was a delightful way to spend my Saturday evening bonding with my 5-year-old daughter. My husband and I thought it would be a perfect show for our little girl as it is perfect family entertainment. This is not a pantomime, which you may expect at this time of year, but a mystical story retelling the classic tale of Snow White.
We arrived at the theatre at 6.40pm for the 7.00pm show, picked up our tickets with ease and were shown to our seats by the very helpful staff. The show was in The Quays theatre, which holds up to 440 spectators and is very cosy.
The story sees Snow White growing up fatherless with her very vain mother, showing her how beauty is above all her main priority in life. Their bond is clear to see until the Queen decides to remarry and sends a portrait of a much younger version of herself to the neighbouring King. The Prince comes to visit and instantly thinks that Snow White is the Queen. The Queen is distraught with jealousy by this and orders the huntsman to take Snow White into the woods, cut out her heart and return with it so she can eat it!
The creativity behind this show was outstanding, from the set to the fantastic, the costumes, the storyline to the suburb dancers. We were all in awe of the whole production. During the festive season, it makes a lovely change to be able to take my daughter to see a show which is both educational and entertaining, instead of the run of the mill panto which we usually go to see.
We had an amazing evening and I would definitely recommend this show to all families.
