The excitement of Christmas can make the start of the school holidays in December a little overwhelming. To keep my little elves calm and happy, I always try and plan a few sessions over the week preceding Christmas when we put on some festive tunes, and we all sit around the kitchen table, and get busy making, creating and crafting for Christmas! The kitchen quickly turns into Santa’s workshop as we prepare for the holiday season. This is where the Baker Ross online Christmas shop comes into its own. With crafts, from Nativity projects to ceramic baubles, candle crafts and more, and all at such good value, ensuring that you all have the opportunity to create a bundle that will keep your naughty elves on the nice list!
This year we received a bundle of Baker Ross goodies including polymer clay and magnet discs to create clay magnets, hair scrunchies and fabric pens to make their Christmas hair scrunchies and a couple of Christmas craft kits. Including a DIY Christmas cracker-making kit and a Christmas foil art decorations kit to test and review.
We all love ‘making’ and crafting in our house, and making the scrunchies and polymer clay magnets created much excitement from my girls.
They chose to start with the scrunchies. As soon as my eldest saw the ‘Design Your Own Scrunchie’ bag of 8 scrunchies she was keen to give it a go and got stuck in. They each had four white ‘blank canvas’ hair scrunchies to design. They opened up the Fabric Marker Pens and together they set about designing individual Christmas-inspired hair decorations. They were very excited to be able to wear the finished products to school the next day. The concentration and time spent making them together were a great investment.
The Pastel Polymer Modelling Clay pack has 10 gorgeous pastel colours. The magnets are self-adhesive and need a flat back to attach to, this was achieved by using a small rolling pin to flatten their beautiful hand crafted creations on a piece of greaseproof paper. These will be gifted to Grandparents as Christmas gifts.
The Christmas Foil Art Decorations Kit will add a bit glamour and shimmer to your festive season, the girls really enjoyed making these. You simply peel back the covering on the card design, rub on a foil sheet selecting the colour you wish, and like magic as you lift it reveals a bright, shiny finish. There are several Christmas designs with six foil colours included, each decoration then becomes a unique design. The kits come with everything needed, including the rubbing tool and also ribbon for hanging. A plus is that no glue is required, and as with all of the Baker Ross kits the clear instructions make it easy and mess-free.
Finally, the DIY Christmas Cracker-Making Kit. We just love making our own crackers. The girls source jokes from an old joke book that belonged to their father as a child, I write out the motto’s and we all combine our efforts to make an individually decorated cracker for each family member. My mother likes to buy a secret individual cracker sized gift for each of us and she fills the personalised cracker secretly. The pack contains blank card cracker templates, snaps, hats, jokes & facts and foil ribbon. We still like to personalise ours with our own handwritten jokes and mottos. The girls used the Brush Tip Acrylic Porcelain & Deco Pens to draw and colour them in.
Crafting in any form involves multiple skills and techniques that makes for an excellent learning experience. Whether your little ones are cutting, folding, measuring, sticking, picking things up, counting, colouring, twisting, working out how to make things, listening or following instructions – they are learning but at the same time they are having fun, and likely they are not realising how educational it all is!
If you’ve not yet discovered Baker Ross before, they are a lovely family-run business and they have been around since 1974. They are one of the go-to names for arts and crafts supplies for schools, pre-schools, and, in fact, anyone with a creative gene. What I love about Baker Ross is that their craft kits come with everything that you require in the pack, making it possible to have a go without needing a big stash of craft bits at home, and that it is possible to dive straight in and get making. On the website you can shop by theme, pick up individual supplies, or even grab some fun party pieces. They actually have such a huge range, that it can be hard to choose as you will just want to buy everything!
