playHOORAY! playPROMPTS plus Review

Reviewed by Sarah Bowyer
Now that my son is in school, it means I have to think of hundreds of things to keep him entertained during the school holidays and rainy days (and we seem to have had a lot of them lately). I don’t want him to be watching television or reaching for electronic devices.
When I got the chance to review the playPROMPTS plus cards, I was excited to see how these cards would help in giving us something to do each day.
There is a lovely introduction by the creator of the playPROMPTS plus cards who is an Early Years Specialist. She gives advice on how to use the cards and gives ideas on where to do certain activities.
In the pack there are 50 cards with an activity on each side, giving you 100 activities to do. The cards are good quality, they have quirky colours and writing on them and won’t get too messy if a child manages to get hold of them.
An example of the activities is; Turn lollipop sticks into roads with dotted lines down the centre. Use the sticks to build your own roads for little cars. Also, set up a water tray with animals and lots of litter, from the recycling perhaps with some tongs to collect it all. Talk about looking after the planet.

Most of the activities are really quick and easy to do and they don’t need a lot of special equipment to do them. You can just pick a card and pretty much get on with whatever it tells you to do. All the cards are categorised into groups which are; Play, Make It, After School, Boredom Buster and Get Thinking with 20 activities for each group.
These cards will be ideal over the long summer holidays, especially if the weather isn’t brilliant. I have made it into a daily game where my son gets to choose a card. If it is a simple task then he gets to do the other side.
The only slight criticism I have with these cards is they don’t come with any storage case, they are provided in a matchbox style box. A little tin would have been handy as they fall out of the packet pretty easily. That said, after looking through the playPROMPTS website they can be purchased with a personalised tin and even a printable version.
Overall, I think these cards are a great. They will certainly keep us entertained over the school holidays. I also think that I will buy these cards as gifts for other parents that I know and would definitely recommend them to anyone with young children. There are other versions of the cards available for outdoors, eating out, numbers and more.
The playPROMPTS cards are an excellent way of discouraging screen time and encouraging your child to play while learning new skills such as thinking and problem solving.
