The Theatre Royal Glasgow has been undergoing some refurbishment and is a beautiful theatre with modern amenities. The staff are a credit to the Theatre being both efficient and friendly which made the evening out here that bit more special.
April in Paris was originally written in 1992 and John Godber has updated it to be as relevant today as it was then. Bet (Shobna Gulati from Coronation Street fame) and Al (Joe McGann of Upper Hand also a long term crush of mine) are brilliant as the 27 year married couple struggling to readjust to Al losing his job and the kids having left home. I think everyone can see a part of themselves in Bet and Al which makes them instantly likeable.
Bet works in a shoe shop and dreams of a better life. She enters competitions as a way to escape her boring life much to Al’s disdain. Al paints depressing landscapes which Bet cannot understand either. When Bet wins a competition prize of a night away to Paris it is like a dream come true for Bet, Al does not quite feel the same way.
The journey that Al and Bet go on is both touching and hilarious at the same time and you feel yourself cheering for this couple to make it work. The scene where Bet dances round her handbag on the boat to Paris will make me chuckle for a while to come. The set is fantastically cleverly done which just adds to the slickness of this show.
This is a fabulously witty and clever show with laugh out loud moments and Shobna and Joe are absolutely fantastic in their roles. Get along to see this while you can.
