Annie at the Liverpool Empire Review

24-29 April 2019

Last night I went to Liverpool’s Empire theatre along with my mum and 6 year old daughter to watch Annie. Somehow I’ve managed to go my whole life without watching either the movie or stage version of Annie, although I was aware of the basic story and of course the song Tomorrow.

The musical tells the story of Annie a young girl living in Miss Hannigan’s home for orphaned girls. Annie is given the opportunity to go and stay with billionaire Mr Warbucks for two weeks over the Christmas period and things begin to change for Annie from that point onwards.

In this production there are three young actresses playing Annie, in the performance we saw, Taziva-Faye Katsande took on the role. Taziva-Faye was absolutely superb as Annie, her singing was phenomenal and was matched equally with her dancing. A wonderful performer!

Craig Revel Horwood took on the role of mean Miss Hannigan. As a Strictly Come Dancing fan my daughter found it hilarious to see Craig all dressed up as a woman and his character provided many comedic moments throughout the show.

One of our favourites in the show was Alex Bourne as Mr / Daddy Warbucks, he played the character very well and is a brilliant actor.

However the absolute stars of the show were without a doubt the young actresses playing the orphaned girls. Just like the actresses playing Annie there are three groups of girls playing these parts throughout the production. Last night it was the turn of Team Chrysler, these six girls were absolutely amazing. Their singing and dancing were outstanding, all of them in time and a true treat to watch but Orla McDonagh as Molly stole our hearts she was so cute and it was wonderful to see such a big stage presence in such a small girl.

This is a fun family show full of memorable music and dynamic choreography. Definitely a five star musical.
