On arrival, both my daughter and I were very excited after watching the Annie movie so many times we just couldn’t wait!
The first thing I noticed was the set design, created by Colin Richmond his simplistic take with the main focus being a jigsaw puzzle allowed us to focus on Annie’s story being put together – like a jigsaw. It was a breath-taking set, that wowed the audience as soon as they took their seats!
Annie is forced to live a life of misery and torment at the orphanage of Miss Hannigan (Anita Dobson, EastEnders). Determined to find her real parents, her luck changes when she is chosen to spend Christmas at the residence of famous billionaire, Oliver Warbucks (Alex Bourne). Spiteful Miss Hannigan has other ideas and hatches a plan to spoil Annie’s search!!!
Dobson leads the cast – take on Miss Hannigan. Whilst her acting prowess was never in question, Dobson grabs with both hands and excels with incredible comic timing and a brilliant dry humour, she has the audience involved and on their feet and smiling.
Annie was note perfect and clearly knew her role inside out – along with the rest of the ‘orphans’ on stage, they proved why kids are such naturals and that personified their characters perfectly.
Sandy, her dog (real animal), given all the noise and lights and even his solo parts he never stepped a paw wrong!
Filled with well-loved songs, including ‘Hard Knock Life’ and ‘Tomorrow’, it’d be very difficult to sit and not have a smile on your faces.
Annie is one of the best musicals to introduce the children to theatre. It was great to see so much youth within the auditorium, but that is not to say that it’s not one for the adults too. It totally took me back to my childhood, I loved Annie as a child, so I had high expectations and it did not disappoint! My 6-year-old daughter was transfixed from start to finish, I would definitely recommend it.
Annie the musical is currently on tour around the UK, for more information and tour dates visit www.anniethemusicaltour.uk.
