I was asked to review Life of Pi Milton Keynes Theatre Wednesday 20th September.  Strangely enough I had no idea of the story behind this and have never seen the film.  So we came to Milton Keynes Theatre on one of the rainiest nights ever, managed to park in a reasonably close space near to the theatre, and made our way into the packed auditorium.  If you have time Milton Keynes has a multitude of places to eat or drink prior to your show.

I really don’t know where to start with this most amazing, astonishing brilliantly acted piece of theatre.  Although not a one man show, there is one man who is truly pivotal to the whole story, step up Pi played admirably by Divesh Subaskaran.  It says in the programme, this is his professional debut, what an enthralling performance.  The story has so many layers, I can only but urge you to go see it for yourself.  Although an attractive story for children, I personally feel, this is for adults.  Much of the deeper storyline, would go over their heads.  I was engrossed in the dialogue around religion.  That said, children along with adults would be entranced by the many animals on stage.  Fantastic puppetry, absolutely nearly stole the show.  In the early parts, the zoo in India was just fascinating.  The movement really captured the essence of the animal they were portraying.  My favourite science, the shoal of fish, it was just captivating.  Unreal to think that this was all performed on a stage and you weren’t at the aquarium.

Honestly for me it was the marigold hotel meets I bought a zoo, but with so much more depth.  Pi survives the sinking of a ship and the story begins with his retelling of events.  The music added to tone ambiance and the sets, were simply brilliant, one minute a zoo, then a marketplace, then a boat in the ocean, all totally believable.  Well done to everyone involved as much backstage as on stage.  The whole cast were brilliant.  I don’t think I have ever watched a performer that made me think as much as The Life of Pi.  Is there a god, if so which god?  It’s really what ever gets you through life, hour by hour, day by day.

A special mention must go to the puppeteers and those who made the incredibly life like animals.  Although some scenes were definitely not for the faint hearted, they were all so very believable.  This was a show like no other I have seen for a long time, a brilliant script with a meaningful story delivered by the most wonderful cast. Lots will resonate with many of us.  Did Pi survive all those days at sea with a Bengal tiger called Richard Parker …. You will know in your heart the answer.  Honestly this is a journey you do not want to miss. Bravo everyone, bravo, absolutely loved every minute.
