I had a wonderful time at the opening night of The Great Gatsby, as part of the Tethered Wits 2023 Open-Air Tour. Having never been to an open-air theatre production, I was unsure of what to expect. Now, I would one hundred percent recommend it to everyone.

The Actor’s Church in Covent Garden is a beautiful setting in itself, there were benches surrounding the stage, which gave an authentic, intimate, and comfortable feel. As it got darker as the evening progressed, fairy lights came on throughout the gardens, providing plenty of lighting for the show. There is a small bar in the Church gardens selling cocktails, spirits, wines, beers, soft drinks, and even little tubs of ice cream.

The cast were absolutely outstanding, playing multiple roles throughout, and it was clear as to which character they were portraying, even with very quick changes. The costumes were spot on for the 1920’s, and the storytelling was performed so well, you really felt as though you were a part of everything that was happening, as opposed to merely watching. Oliver as Nick Carraway was endearing, and inviting. His tone was comforting and sincere, with his expressions being exactly as the audiences – showing how well he was performing his part. Olivia & Amelia were captivating in their both of the roles they each played. They stayed within the correct character mannerisms as and when with ease, their accents never slipped, and Olivia especially had truly touching expressions. Dealing as Tom Buchanan, as well as some eclectic supporting characters, was fantastic. He was eccentric, and loud, and never broke character. His voice echoed with anger, and the audience laughed along with him. An exemplary actor. Rory played the role of Jay Gatsby very well, keeping it shrouded in mystery throughout, and an outstanding display of emotion towards the end. And just the same with his portrayal of George Wilson.

I really enjoyed the mix-in of playing musical instruments, a small sector of tap dance, and the innovative ways they portrayed scenes (e.g. of being in the car), and how they showed they were in different spaces. It was always clear, with subtle transitions, which I had anticipated may be difficult in a smaller, open-air venue. But it was done with ease, as to never take your focus away from the actor’s, and the scene.

I would recommend sitting as close to the front as possible – I was sat in the last row, and whilst I could always hear what was happening, it was just a little difficult at times. However, surrounding sounds did not disturb the actors in their performances.

I was captivated throughout. If you get the chance, definitely go and view this wonderful production of The Great Gatsby. I am excited to see future productions by the Tethered Wits company. All involved should be extremely proud of what they have created together. Further, to be supporting an incredible charity through on the door collections at the end of their shows.
