I’m not very adventurous when it comes to alcoholic drinks, as I tend to stick to what I know. My usual drink of choice is a fruity gin or pinot grigio wine, with the occasional cider to mix things up. So when I was sent a bottle of Rooster Rojo tequila to try, I was a little unsure what to think as it’s quite different to my usual tipple. The last time I had any tequila was over 10 years ago, and I was rather ill afterwards so I haven’t chosen to have it since.

Rooster Rojo tequila is made from 100% Blue Weber agave juice at “Fabrica de Tequilas Finos” distillery, located in the city of Tequila, Jalisco state of Mexico, at the foot of Tequila hill. The agave is cooked, fermented, distilled, filtered and then aged in big French oak casks for at least 2 months. The Rooster Rojo tequila is available in 4 different varieties: Blanco, Reposado, Añejo, and smoked pineapple. I received the reposado to try, which is supposed to have a light oakiness from being aged in oak barrels, making it softer than other tequilas and great for drinking with mixers.

We did try it neat first but couldn’t quite bring ourselves to knock it back as a shot! It is quite strong at 38% volume and I think my days of drinking tequila slammers have definitely passed me by! Now that I’m older I definitely prefer a longer drink that I can enjoy rather than drinking shots to just get drunk. It happens to have been Margarita day on 22 February, and it wasn’t until I received this tequila that I realised it’s one of the main ingredients in a margarita! I didn’t have any Cointreau or lime so I popped out to purchase those and then I was ready to make my first margarita.

I limed the edge of a large gin glass then rolled it in salt as instructed, added lots of ice, put in 50ml of the tequila, 20ml of Cointreau and 25ml of lime juice then gave it a swirl. You’re supposed to use a cocktail shaker but I don’t have one of those so I made do with mixing it in the glass! I tried it as it was, but the salt on the glass was not for me, so I wiped it off straight away… sipping the margarita made me think of summer as it was quite refreshing, with the tequila giving it quite a warming punch. It was tasty, but I decided I needed it to be a longer cocktail so added some mango juice which made it delicious and fruity! I decided to call it the Red Dwarf (if you know you know) so I have the makings of a lovely cocktail ready for hot days in the summer, over lots of ice.

I enjoyed drinking this tequila, and will be saving it to enjoy in margaritas over the summer as that was a very nice way to drink it.
