I imagine some people would drink non-alcoholic beer on a night out if they had to drive so I imagine they would need the non-alcoholic beer they chose to be as close in taste as possible to a regular alcoholic beer.  After all, who would want to endanger their driving licence by being over the limit from drinking alcohol.

My husband on the other hand has never been a big drinker.  He often enjoys a pint of beer whilst out for a meal, or a glass of beer in an evening whilst watching TV after dinner, but he has never been someone who goes to the pub and drinks pint after pint.

A few years ago around Christmas time he experienced a fast heart rate after drinking a glass of regular beer.  He had also finished off the left over cold white sauce laced with brandy which I had made and we had eaten on Christmas Day with our Christmas pudding.  (He is a great finisher offer, even if I don’t want something finished off!)  A visit to A & E followed and an overnight stay!

He was advised not to drink alcohol as a precaution as they thought he had had a reaction to the alcohol over Christmas.  I might add that over this period he had never drunk more than one glass of beer a night, not even a full bottle.

When I saw there was a chance to review a non-alcoholic beer I jumped at it!!  Just one bottle of Esmer Alda Non-Alcoholic Cerveza duly arrived, but they did send more when this was queried.

On the label it says ‘Taste the Tequila Flavour’.  ‘Made with Mochingbird Spirit 0.5% vol.’  It also says ‘A light and golden non-alcoholic beer with a touch of Tequila taste reminiscent of a refreshing Mexican Cerveza with all the familiar flavour. It also says it is suitable for Vegan’s.  I am not so sure regarding the Gluten Free status; it does have the wheat symbol but with a line through.  Wheat and Oats are listed in the ingredients so as my 18-year-old granddaughter has Coeliac Disease she decided not to risk trying it but it would be interested to know if she could have.

Sunday Dinner with daughter and granddaughter present seemed to be an ideal opportunity for my husband to try this beer along with my daughter.  I am not a beer drinker, but I do enjoy a weak shandy, I tried a little but would have preferred it mixed with lemonade.  They both could taste what they thought was malt, neither was sure about tasting the Tequila although I am not sure either has ever tasted Tequila before.  I am sorry to say it wasn’t something either of them loved, but my husband would have had it again if it was the only non-alcoholic beer available.

When more bottles of this beer arrived while my husband was away on business, I enlisted the help of a friend of my daughter’s who enjoys a glass of beer to try it with his pals.  They really enjoyed this non-alcoholic beer even though they are normal beer drinkers.

On thinking about it my husband and daughter were probably not the ideal people to sample this non-alcoholic beer.  My daughter’s friend and his pals on the other hand loved this non-alcoholic beer and soon made short work of it.  Some said they could taste the Tequila, others couldn’t.

I suggest that you try a bottle of Esmer Alda Non-Alcoholic Cerveza for yourself and see what you think.  It is worth it to avoid being over the limit when out drinking of having a meal with friends.
