Reviewed by Rachel Cassey-Holland

The Lumbros Biofeedbac Belt is an innovative back support belt with the main aim of relieving back pain and improving posture. It is British made and has been patented, boasting UK specialist input in its development and also purports to relieve pain in every area – from the neck to the lower back. As per the packaging: “Biofeedbac takes the latest health innovation techniques in sports science drug-free medicine and applies them to the home environment”. The belt retails for approximately £30 online.

I’ve been experiencing back pain for a number of years, mostly in my lower back. Having three children, being a horse rider and with generally bad posture my back has taken a bit of a beating, certainly muscularly speaking. I was really pleased to be given the opportunity to review the Lumbros Biofeedbac Belt because I (apparently) complain endlessly about my back being sore, but in reality I seem to have very little time to go and actually do anything about it.

The Lumbros belt was enclosed in very attractive sealed packaging, so I instantly felt confident that I was the first to try it on. I must admit I wasn’t sure what to expect – my previous experience of wearing a “belt” to support me was during pregnancy and fashioned out of the strongest and longest piece of Tubigrip known to man, which I had to pull over my bump. It left me hot, flustered and very tired having managed to finally put it on. This belt takes that Tubigrip and throws it into another dimension! Flipping the package of the belt over there are exceptionally clear and helpful instructions with a picture about how to put the belt on and fix into the correct position. There are also commonly asked questions and answers about its size, how to care for it and how to use it. So far so great!

I took the belt out of the packaging to take a look. It’s approximately 6.5 inches width at its widest part, which sits nicely across your back, narrowing to about half that where it meets across the abdomen. The belt affixes in a wraparound style with industrial looking Velcro. On the inside of the belt there are two green sensory pads with raised bumps, which look like massage beads. In between those pads the belt is ridged, which makes it look like it gives a good degree of flexibility when you’re wearing it. I carefully read the four steps to fit it – the instructions couldn’t be clearer or simpler – just line up the belt so it sits above your natural belt line ensuring that each green pad sits on either side of your spine. The next step is to just wrap it over your abdomen so that the Velcro closes it into place. I tried this part a couple of times, as it’s definitely possible to have it too tight or too loose. You can even fix the belt into place over light clothing if you wish but I put it straight onto my skin. You then pull your clothes over the top and nobody would know it was there unless they touched your back on top of it. I made it snug and comfortable for me and waited a few minutes to see what I thought.

The first thing I noticed was that the green sensory pads were picking up and massaging the plethora of knots I have in my lower back. It actually highlighted to me quite how many knots I have, which surprised me! The massaging effect first of all felt a little sore but then I felt some relief. The second thing I noticed was my posture. Without trying my posture felt so much better – I was standing taller and straighter, not slouching. I even looked taller in the mirror. I sat down at my desk and found I was sitting much better and straighter. I then took the belt off and did some typing and realized how much the belt had improved my seated position. Slowly the dull ache started to creep back into my lower neck and a little across my shoulder too. The belt went straight back on!

The instructions on the packaging advise you to wear the belt for 30 minutes maximum the first time you put it on. I must admit that, by the time I got to 30 minutes of continuous wear on that first occasion, I was ready to take it off. The difference when I took it off was immense. The belt definitely made me feel so much better posture wise, but I had the impression that my spine and the muscles were tiring a little by the end of the 30 minutes. Since that time I have increased the time I wear it slowly but surely and I am definitely growing more and more used to it and this should increase over time. Eventually I could see myself wearing it for significant chunks of the day at the least just to improve my posture, as well as for pain relief. It’s so easy to wear, totally comfortable and non-irritating and absolutely invisible under your clothes.

The only slightly negative thing I could find to say about it is that it does seem to heat you up a little underneath the belt. It’s definitely breathable fabric, I can see that, but where the green pads are heat seems to be generated and I have found when taking the belt off that I do have a little bit of a sweaty patch! Now this could be just down to me and I do also believe that the excess heat is probably a helping factor in dealing with pain. For me, though, the initial cold feeling where the belt sits when you take it off was noticeable and perhaps a little uncomfortable momentarily, but it certainly would not put me off because the benefits far outweigh that very minor point and for that reason I would recommend wearing it next to your skin rather than over your clothing. Furthermore, the belt is super easy to keep clean, just needing a wipe down with a damp cloth when necessary.

I am absolutely thrilled to have been able to try this belt. Would I recommend it to anyone? Absolutely, yes! This is a high-tech yet simple and effective product at a very reasonable price. My husband has already tried it as he has terrible posture and he absolutely loved it as well. I am also taking it to my mother to try as she has just been diagnosed with back problems following an MRI – I feel certain that I will be purchasing her one of these belts for Christmas. 5 stars all round, thank you for the opportunity to try your excellent product.
