Son of a Preacher Man at the King’s Theatre Edinburgh Review

17-21 October 2017

A whole performance based around the incredible songs of the renowned and well-loved Dusty Springfield, this is a lighthearted musical about three strangers who find themselves seeking love at a coffee shop. All for different reasons they set out to look for what used to be a renowned record shop called the Preacher Man back in the sixties where the owner would provide help and guidance to those who needed it. However, with the record shop now a coffee shop and the preacher man dead, his son is expected to fill his very big shoes and help these three hopeless strangers find love. Completely out of his depth Simon, the son of a preacher man, makes some mistakes before finally following in his father’s footsteps.

With a cast of such well-known names this will not disappoint. Unfortunately, Diana Vickers did not make this performance, however her understudy, Jess Barker, was excellent as the young feisty Kat.

The various musical instruments were incredible and for me made the show. One of my favourites of the night was Spooky sang by Ellie-Jane Goddard who has a fantastic voice.

I had an enjoyable evening at the King’s Theatre. I would recommend this fun show to friends and family of all ages. I would give the night 3 stars out of 5. A must see for all those Dusty Springfield fans.

The King’s is a traditional small theatre with a welcoming warm atmosphere and ambiance. It is very comfortable and clean with extremely helpful, friendly staff. Our seats in the stalls provided a great view of the stage. The theatre is located in the heart of Edinburgh City Centre, so easily accessible by public transport with parking available around the theatre. There is also plenty of option for pre/post theatre drinks and food with the variety of restaurants and bars nearby.
