Breakout Manchester Captured Room Review

Reviewed by Louise Totton
We are massive fans of Breakout, so of course jumped at the chance to try out the new Captured room at the High Street site of Breakout in Manchester. Between the four of us, we think we’ve tried 5 rooms previously and we have a pretty good escape record so a lot of personal pride was at stake here.
The Captured room is slightly different to the other rooms in that we thought the experience and theming was much more immersive than some of the other rooms and it certainly had a more chilling, scary theme than the others.
After we were briefed about the task ahead of us, we were led down into what would be our prison for the next hour and given precisely no guidance whatsoever on how to escape. We were simply told that our lives depended on it…
I won’t go into the nature of the puzzles too much, as I think it spoils the experience for prospective escapees. But for the four of us, we found there was a really good variety of logical puzzles, some lateral thinking and some slightly physical challenges too. It meant that everyone had something to add to the challenge; each one of us managed to solve some of the components, but we would really have struggled were it not a team effort.
All the time that you are trying to escape, you are aware that time is ticking away and it really feels like it is imperative that you solve the puzzles before time ticks away. You are watched all of the time through CCTV cameras, and if you get stuck or Breakout senses you are struggling, they can provide titbits of hints via a TV screen.
Captured has a room difficulty rating of 4/5, and I would suggest that’s pretty accurate. We did manage to escape, with about 5 minutes to spare, but were told that if people do escape it’s usually in the last minute. I think our experience probably helped us to escape more quickly than usual.
I have to say that Captured is definitely my favourite room to date. We loved the variety of puzzles and the creepy theming was absolutely top notch.
Breakout really is a fantastic, different, night out and I absolutely recommend it.
I can’t wait to return and try another room!
Rating: 5/5
