My husband is a big fan of Dave Gorman and he was really looking forward to seeing Dave Gorman in a live show.
Viewers of Dave’s “Modern Life is Goodish” will be familiar with Dave Gorman’s sideways look at life, pulling odd examples from things he has found whilst browsing the web or walking down the high street.
His style has been described as “a blend of stand-up and documentary comedy” and this is probably the best way of putting it. He presents his one man show in the style of stand-up but rather than gags finds humour in the strangeness of modern life as observed on the web and in the way that people have changed since the introduction of new technologies.
The sell-out show started with an unexpected extra, comedian Nick Doody who performed for around 40 minutes. Nick was entertaining however there was quite a lot of swearing in his act which may not be for everyone. We felt he improved towards the end of his act and his observation about women’s toiletries was spot on!
Following an interval Dave took to the stage and for the next two hours used his PowerPoint presentation to highlight humour in modern life with twitter, selfies, smartphones and foxes. Anyone familiar with his TV show “Modern Life is Goodish” will know exactly what to expect, this was just the same but more of it including two found poems on The Pope and Paul Hollywood which were very cleverly put together. A nice touch at the end of the show was Nick Doody taking to the stage for the last poem and accompanying Dave on the piano
The Lowry is easy to find and the Lyric theatre is a large modern venue with comfortable seating and a good view of the stage. There is plenty of parking nearby at the Lowry Centre which cost us £5.50 for the evening. Visitors who make use of the many restaurants in the centre can receive a discount on this rate.
Although Dave is one of my husband’s favourite TV comedians and we really enjoyed the night out, we wondered if the live show would be a little different to his TV work. This wasn’t the case but everyone in the audience was laughing throughout the night and clearly everyone thoroughly enjoyed it.
