Jimmy’s World Grill Restaurant, Luton Review
Jimmy’s World Grill Restaurant
Luton, Bedfordshire

On Saturday lunchtime, I took the family on a trip to Jimmy’s World Grill Restaurant in Luton. The restaurant was very easy to find as it’s located right on St George’s Square in the centre of town. We decided to eat quite early as our toddler was starting to make it known that his tummy was rumbling (“Food! Now, mummy!”), but even as we were arriving, the restaurant was starting to fill up.
It’s a very large restaurant with lots of tables for couples, families and larger groups and we were shown to our table by the manager. Because we were first-time visitors he explained about all the buffet options and the ‘live cooking’ – this was really helpful otherwise I think we might have missed something delicious because there is so much to choose from – and took our drinks order. While we waited for our drinks to arrive we took a look at what was on offer.
It was great to see that a buffet restaurant had a full range of dishes on at lunchtime. I’ve been to some buffet restaurants where the full selection of dishes is only available on the evenings. At Jimmy’s there was a brilliant choice of Indian, Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Italian and Mexican. I think there were around 25 different hot buffet choices, plus all the different cooking stations where the chefs prepare your food while you wait.
Between our party of five I think we must have tried almost every dish on the menu! I started off with some exotic salads, sushi and some duck pancakes while the little one (just over 2 years old) tucked heartily into his prawn risotto which was freshly made by the ‘live cooking’ chefs at the back of the restaurant. For my main course I chose a variety of curries and Indian side dishes, including a peshwari naan cooked to order in the tandoor oven by one of the chefs. I’ve never seen how a naan is prepared so it was really interesting to watch.
All the food we tried at Jimmy’s was of excellent quality. The main course buffet dishes were nice and hot and full of flavour and there’s something for everyone, whether you like your food mild or with a bit of a kick. The only thing we didn’t get round to tasting was the Indian dosa ‘pancakes’ but I’ve got my eye on those for next time. My family enjoyed trying some new foods as well as some familiar ones. There was a great choice of desserts too from fresh fruit, cakes and sweets, through to ice creams in some really unusual flavours. We were absolutely stuffed by the end of our visit!
I particularly liked the atmosphere and the styling of Jimmy’s. The dark wood tables and subtle lighting make it feel really cosy, despite the restaurant being really quite big. And the background music is just that – loud enough to hear but not intrusive into your conversation. As I’ve got older that sort of thing had become more important to me! Waitressing staff were very friendly and attentive, always making sure that our plates were cleared promptly and checking that we were ok for drinks.
It’s a great place to take the family for good value and great quality food. We will certainly be coming back here again.
