My son showed an interest in this toy for obvious reasons. I was dubious (also for obvious reasons) but decided to let him have it and see what it was like.

It came in a small package with minimal waste, which is a plus for me to begin with as many toys have layers of packaging that just fills the bin.

The toy itself is made of plastic and soft rubber and looks as though it could stand up to some rough play by my over energetic child.

It is contained within a small plastic jar with a screw on lid which my son (aged 7) could open easily, but my 1 year old could not, which is always a bonus with small children around.

The reason for the storage jar becomes apparent when it is opened. The bug, which in our case is a cross between a skunk and a praying mantis, smells as soon as you open the jar. The smell is offensive enough to please the children but not strong enough to keep the house smelling outside of the immediate area. You can squeeze the bugzzz rear end to intensify the smell and shoot a jet of the smell.

My son had great fun chasing his friends, especially his squeamish cousin, around with the bug for a good half hour, at which point they all became a bit bored and it was sealed back in its jar. It was resurrected for his friend visiting and to ‘scare grandma’ but has spent most time in the jar.

The novelty of it has worn off pretty quickly and he hasn’t asked for any other 9 in the collection, which he usually does with a collectable toy.

As a stocking filler the toy is a nice little buy, but hasn’t made it into his favourites.

Rating: 3/5
