Photo Creator Beauty Cam by Canal Toys is a good introduction to photography for children aged 7 and above. It mixes real digital photography with creativity and lets children take their own photos without having to hand over your smartphone.

Inside the box, you will find:

* 1 x Beauty Cam
* 1 x USB charging cable
* 1 x wrist strap

It looks like a make-up compact and is very lightweight. The wrist strap makes it easy to carry around, and it would also easily fit into a rucksack or mum’s handbag. The colours and design of the compact are cute.

When you open the compact, it springs to life. The ring light on one side shines a bright light onto your face for the perfect selfie. Because it has a dual lens, you can also flip it around to take photos of other people or scenes. There’s a small button on the side to press when you’re ready to take a picture, and the other features are operated by touchscreen.

There are three light settings to choose from, giving your pictures different shades, as well as twenty filters to add special effects or fun frames. These are easily selected from a picture carousel in the bottom right of the screen.

In the settings mode, there is the option to put a time and date stamp on the pictures. I tried and tried, but couldn’t change the date and time to the correct ones, so all our photos have the wrong date and time on them, which is a bit disappointing. In the settings, you can also adjust the volume and brightness and change the language. It has internal memory to store photos, or they can be transferred to a micro SD card.

The box states that the Beauty Cam can be used for videos, so it was a little disappointing to find that this is only possible after inserting a micro SD card, which isn’t included. The Beauty Cam shuts off automatically when closed or if it hasn’t been used for twenty minutes, and it’s easily charged using the included cable.

Our seven-year-old loved it. It took her about thirty seconds to figure out how to use it. While I was still reading the instruction sheet, she had already taken a few selfies and was adding filters! Watching her do all the pouting and posing really made me chuckle. She’ll have great fun using this with her friends and is already planning to take it on her trip to London so she can take pictures of the buildings to show me when she gets home. She really likes the idea of having her own camera to do this, rather than having to ask the adults to let her use their phones.

The Photo Creator Beauty Cam is available from Amazon and other toy retailers, priced at £35. It makes an ideal gift. At the time of writing this review, the price has been reduced to £29.99 on the Amazon website.
