With the clocks changing and the nights drawing in, my thoughts are now starting to turn to Christmas. For my family this means lots of food and drink being consumed over the festive period so I’m always on the lookout for new food to try. I was delighted to be asked to review the Cake Box Chocolate Orange Cheesecake which is from their Winter range.
The cheesecake is described as “The perfect combination of velvety chocolate with a zesty twist. Topped with fresh strawberries, chocolate orange and a scattering of orange curls, this yuletide treat will steal the spotlight at festive gatherings”.
We’ve recently had a branch of Cake Box open up in our local shopping centre, I’ve walked past a few times, noticing the pink sign and delicious looking array of cakes on display inside, but have never been in.
Cake Box started as a single store in 2008, there are now stores in over 300 locations along with a website where cakes can be ordered for delivery. The founder’s vision was to restore Britain’s long-standing traditional cake bakeries, which sadly are now few and far between. The stores offer fresh cream cakes baked on demand. Every cake ordered is handmade before it is delivered or collected using the finest quality ingredients. delivery or collection.
One of the unique selling point is that all cakes sold by Cake Box are egg-free. The founders of the company follow a lacto vegetarian diet which prompted them to set up the company to cater for this. It is also a great choice for anyone who has an egg allergy. The website assures us that you won’t be able to taste the difference!
I was very much looking forward to trying the Chocolate Orange Cheesecake as being a lover of both chocolate and cake it sounded like a great combination and would be a definite contender for dessert at Christmas.
The cheesecake was delivered by hand (presumably from our local store) in a large cardboard box. When ordering from the website there is the option to either collect the cake from store (free of charge) or have it delivered for £9.95. For those who don’t have a Cake Box store nearby, there are a limited number of cakes on the website that can be ordered for courier delivery.
Upon opening the box I was immediately blown away by the appearance of the cheesecake. It was adorned with fresh raspberries, chocolate flakes, maltesers, chocolate orange segments, orange curls and bright green whipped cream and looked amazingly festive.
The cheesecake was on a circular card base, with plastic around the edge to keep it pristine during transport, this had to be removed prior to eating. The cheesecake was approximately 6 inches, which according to the website was enough to feed six people (we got eight slices from it).
The cheesecake was VERY rich and chocolatey, it had a smooth consistency and the biscuit base added crunch and helped to tone down the chocolatey-ness. It’s not often that we get defeated by chocolate but this was just a bit too intense for us. We did serve it with vanilla ice cream on the second day which we enjoyed more.
As it was a chocolate orange cheesecake I had expected there to be an orange flavour to the cheesecake itself, however this didn’t seem to be the case. The only orange flavour that we noticed was the orange curls on the top. We also found that the bright green cream had an unpleasant bitter taste to it which unfortunately slightly ruined the overall flavour of the cheesecake as it left a lasting aftertaste it also stained our fingers (although this washed off quite easily)! It did actually mention on the box that the coloured cream may stain and could be bitter to the taste, so it seems strange that Cake Box would use this in their recipes as there must be alternatives that would taste and look nice.
Another slightly negative point was that there were no ingredients or allergy information included with the cheesecake. The information would probably be available on line when ordering the products, however if this had been received as a gift I would like to know what it contained.
Overall the chocolate orange cheesecake would make an amazing centrepiece for a Christmas Celebration, it is very decadent and would be ideal for any chocolate lover.
