It’s never too early to start thinking about buying school shoes for the new school year. As a Nanny to four school age grandchildren, I like to help out by buying their school shoes. Having had four children ourselves, we have learnt the hard way that buying cheaper options available maybe from supermarkets (nothing wrong with them they are great value for money) doesn’t always save you money in the long run. We have found over the years, especially with three heavy footed boys to choose wisely.

Start-Rite shoes were established in 1792 and they make shoes for children and teenagers. As with most retailers in the modern world you can shop for all your needs via their very comprehensive website, it’s an amazing experience with options to measure your child’s feet using your phone, a paper measuring guide or a size guide calculator, perfect for those of us that lead busy lives or worst nightmare is shoe shopping with all the family. I have used the online size guide several times now and have not got it wrong yet. Equally if you want an in-store experience you can enter your post code on the website and local stores to you will come up as a list.

Start-Rite offer a very good range of school shoes, on this occasion we were looking for our five year old grandson who starts year one in September 2026. The remit is hard wearing, a little funky (more to satisfy mum than him) easy to take on and off, to encourage his independence, and most importantly robust enough to last more than one term providing he doesn’t grow out of them!

We opted for the Quad, which is made from black leather with a rip tape fastening. They look quite sporty, more a mix of trainer and shoe than a formal school shoe. The shoes are quite weighty and very well made, they look and feel super smart. The shoes come in standard, wide and extra wide fittings, it is very important to get the right fit for your child’s feet. There is in this particular style also half sizes available. We have had school shoes from the brand before and have always found them very hard wearing, yes they may cost a little more, but they are certainly worth it for the quality of the shoe.

Whether boys or girls, they are all super active at school, and their shoes need to be able to withstand a certain amount of wear and tear. Everything so far fills us with confidence, they look and feel smart and tick all the boxes around comfort, there is even extra protection around the toes (for all those budding footballers and climbers in the playground).

The biggest battle of buying school shoes is that the child likes them, I lose count of how many sulky children I have left a shoe shop with over the years! We have a very happy grandson, who thinks he is a super-fast super hero running in his new school shoes. We feel confident we have made a good choice and the shoes will stand up to the rigours of school life come September.
