Arriving at Venue Cymru in Llandudno to see Peter Pan on Ice, performed by the Russian Ice Stars, I braced myself for a busy and expensive car park – wrong! There was plenty of space and parking was priced at just £1.20 for the whole night! The venue was well sign posted and we found the ticket office easily. The lady behind the desk was happy and friendly and made a fuss of my four year old daughter – which she loved! She gave us some helpful advice on places to eat and we decided to stay at the theatre for dinner and from the moment we were seated the staff were happy, friendly and helpful. Service was quick and the food was amazing! Reasonably priced too!!
After dinner we headed down to the theatre once they gave the 5 minute start warning and were shown to our seats, again by very friendly and helpful staff. The seats were excellent, comfortable and spacious. I must also add that the refreshments were extremely reasonable and even the flashing light toys on sale for the children were not extortionate! Makes a lovely change!!
The show started with a backdrop of an enormous closed book, which then opened up into the children’s bedroom. The opening of the book was a clever way to start the show, immediately launching us into the fairytale atmosphere and immersing us in the beautiful story about to unfold.
From start to finish it was beautifully choreographed and performed with such skill and control. The cast made it look so easy, moving with such grace and speed! Despite the show not having any vocals it was easy to follow, even for my four year old. We were perched on the edge of our seats with excitement as each of the characters made their way on stage showcasing their own skating and ballet skills.
Captain Hook, a favourite of my daughters, was a hit with the audience and seemed to really engage with us despite not saying a word! He had both the children and adults laughing one minute and gasping in awe the next. Incredible!
In addition to superb skating, some of the cast showed off their circus training as they performed amazing acrobatic rope tricks high above the stage. One point well worth a mention (oh there were so many!!) was the Hula Hoop of fire. The audience was silent but for gasps of shock as one cast member performed astonishing tricks with a blazing hoola hoop which made it all the more visually breathtaking. The children and adults alike were mesmerised by the fantastic range of professional skating and aerial tricks.
Personal highlights included the headbanger – never did I ever expect such amazing elements of ice skating to be included in this performance – it was truly breathtaking!! We both loved it when the cast got the audience clapping loudly to bring Tinkerbell back to life – the adults clapped just as much as the children! The scene with Peter’s shadow was also excellent and elegantly delivered, especially where Wendy helped him sew it back to his feet.
The show finished with an extensive finale, which showcased each skater in turn as they performed their signature move.
I really could not fault it for family entertainment or value for money. I would definitely go again and definitely recommend it to anyone. I will certainly be looking out for other shows performed by the Russian Ice Stars!!
Quote from my 4 year old – “That was the best night of my life and I want to do it every day!”
