Save The Last Dance For Me

Opera House, Manchester

Opening Night at the Opera House Manchester on the 27th February until the 3rd March 2012. It has a lovely auditorium with a green and gold colour.  The theatre houses 7 bars; Beecham Bar, Stalls Bar, Phantom Bar, Auditorium Bar, Circle Bar, Gallery Bar and the members only 100 Club. Plenty of parking locally round the theatre but it is quite expensive.

Set in the early 60s, a nostalgic musical about two teenager sisters Jennifer and Marie, from Luton who embark on a holiday in Lowesfoft. Full of freedom and high spirits they meet US Airmen who are based just outside of town and are quickly invited to a dance at the base where Marie meets a black US engineer and a holiday romance blossoms.

The plot is surprisingly lacking in emotional intensity and the storyline not very captivating it deals with such contentious issues as race and sex with numerous songs incessantly popping up stalling the storyline .

Jason Denton as Curtis and Megan Jones as Marie are strong vocalists, but sadly there is a lack of chemistry between them to play convincing lovers. AJ Dean as Milton stole the show for me with an outstanding performance with his charisma and musical charm, a joy to watch. Hannah Frederick as Jennifer had a good performance as the older sister, providing a much needed humour to the story.

Thankfully, the young cast excels especially the band who were excellent to listen to, performing old songs such as Seven Day Weekend, Viva Las Vegas, Sweets For My Sweet with talent and enthusiasm.

An unforgettable evening of excellent 60s music with a talented cast of performers, vocals were wonderful with a very strong performance from AJ Dean as Milton.  I really enjoyed the music and the band but unfortunately the storyline was very weak and did not captivate your heart or imagination.

Rating: 3/5
